6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesday, Jenuery 26, 1969 GAIN ON LEADERS Whitby 'Dunnies' boro '- Bomb Peter By CLIFF GORDON Whitby Dunlops took over sole possession of second place in the Metro Junior B hockey league last night with a convinc- ing 6-0 trimph over Peter- borough Bye Rites. Victory moved the Dunlops to within seven points of league leading Etobicoke Indians. Defenceman Ricky Gay spark- ed Whitby with two goals and one assist. Danny Sandford, Phil Solomon, Mike Taylor and Bill Lastic shared singles. It was the first marker of the season for the hard-working Lastic. Bruce Myles earned three aSsists and Taylor picked 'up two. Ian Young was in goal for Dunlops and turned aside 23 shots without a flaw, The locals in the meantime peppered 32 drives at the Peterborough goalie. The Dunnies struck fast and hard as they built up a 3-0 lead in the first period, i creased it to 5-0 by the end of the second frame and picked up their final tally at the eight- minute mark of the third. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR AN OSHAWA RINK of women curlers, representing the Ladies' Section of Oshawa Golf Club, appears headed for the Ontario Silver 'D' championships, to be held at Port Arthur, Feb. 7-10. Mrs. Neil K. (Effie) Hezzelwood's rink emerged as division winners,.a couple of weeks ago, in their playoffs at Thornhill and yesterday, in the South-Eastern Zone playdowns, held at the Scarboro Golf and Country Club, the Oshawa four- some won both of their games. A win this morning, in the third round of the single round-robin series, will clinch their berth in the All-Ontario playdowns. Four division winners are contesting the zone honors and yesterday morning, the Oshawa foursome defeated Mrs. C. LaGroix's Trenton RCAF rink 8-7 and then took a 12-4 decision over Mrs, L. Tobin's Camp Bor- den rink, in the afternoon. The Oshawa Golf Club rink was scheduled to play Mrs. C. Laidley's Lindsay rink this morning, when an Oshawa win would clinch their berth in the All- Ontario finals at Port Arthur. In the event of a loss this morning, the Oshawa rink could be no worse than still tied for top honors, with Lindsay and perhaps the Trenton RCAF tink, The Oshawa rink is comprised of Mrs, Drew (Marg.) Jacobi; Mrs. Harry (Anne) Gay; Mrs. H. A. (Merlee) Law- fence and Mrs. Hezzelwood, skip. xX x x x WHITBY "DUNNIES" scored a 6-0 victory over the Jun- for "B" Petes, right in Peterborough last night. The two- : point win vaulted Dunlops into second place in their OHA Jun- ior "'B'* Metro League race, but still seven points behind the - high-flying Etobicoke squad. Whitby now has a total of 30 ; points, one more than Weston and Brampton, tied for third spot and two more than the fifth-place St. Mike's Buzz- ers. And only one point be- hind that again comes Mark- ham and Neil McNeil, tied for 7th place in this keen scramble, with 27 points apiece. While the Whitby win last night moved them up into second place, it also gave them one more game played than both Weston and Bramp- " : ton, so one or both could pass the "'Dunnies" again, when they play Thursday night. "Dunnies" are in action again this Friday night, at home to Brampton, who play in Dixie on Thursday, so may be a little , {Weary for their trip to Whitby. This could be the key game of the month for the '"'Dunnies", On Sunday afternoon, Dun- lops visit St. Mike's Buzzers: x x x x OSHAWA GENERALS have a similar schedule situation this week, to their Junior "B" affiliates, the "Dunnies". Gen- erals play Peterborough here at the Civic Auditorium tonight and while it is perhaps too much to expect a 6-0 win for the homesters, in this Junior "'A"' tilt, it would be extremely help- ful if the Generals could claim another win. They toppled the "Petes'"' here just 10 days ago and a win tonight would not only boost Oshawa's seasonal record over the Liftlock City squad but it would-also tighten the Gererals' grip on fourth place in the standings. Like Whitby Dunlops, our Generals have two more games before the week is out. They. play in Niagara Falls this Friday night and then visit Hamilton Red Wings on Sunday afternoon. By that time, Generals will have played 43 of their 56 schedule dates, leaving 13 games for the month of February and first week of March -- then comes the playoffs !
