Low Costs, More Business Are New Dairy Policy Aims REGINA (CP) -- A federal dairy policy designed to main- tain high consumption and keep costs down is in the works, Ag- riculture Minister Harry Hays told the annual meeting of the cage Farmers of Canada Tues- jay. He said the program was de- signed to prevent farmers from leaving the dairy industry. G. M. Strudwick of Balgonie,| Sask., Canadian Dairy Associa- tion president, said in an ad- dress opening the four-day con- vention that soaring farm costs must be reduced as a step to- ward bolstering the industry. The current policy of a con- sumer subsidy on butter should be retain@d in combination with measures which could provide equal results. Murray Bywater says it is too early to tell whether a nylon cord found in a jet engine from a KC-135 tanker plane contributed to the crash last Saturday that killed 30 persons, destroyed 11 houses and dam- aged 25 to 30 others in a Wi- chita residential area. Bywater, head of the investi- gating team, said Tuesday: "It is too early to draw a conclu- sion on how it (the cord) got there. "At least half of the manu- facturing milk producers are operating units too small to achieve a satisfactory . . . posi- tion on milk alone," Mr. Hays correctea only by the enlarge- ment of small units. The agriculture minister men- tioned his concern about the cheese export trade and criti- cized the Ontario Cheese Pro- ducers' Marketing Board. "We did a poor job of selling cheese abroad jast year," he said. "We must look at the sys- tem. The demand is there, but we don't even advertise our lcheese, which is the best qual-| lity cheese in the world." Britain last year that "Canada Mr: Hays said he learned in could have got three or four cents a pound more for first- grade Canadian cheddar cheese, which "would mean 24 to 26 cents a hundredweight more for the milk producers."
