16 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursday, Jenvery 14, 1968 CHILD GUIDANCE Patience And By GARRY MYERS, PhD About seyen out of every 1,000 school children are classified as stutterers, These children are not inferior or abnormal. In- deed, they and adult stutterers are not different significantly, except in their speech and. in the way they feel about their speaking experiences. Most stutterers began to stut- ter long' before they entered school, typically between the ages two and four. Studies di- rected by Dr. Wendell Johnson at the State University of lowa reveal that on the average children two to four speak 50 repetitions in each 1,000 words. NORMAL REPETITION Help Stuttering Child He points out that, parents) noticing the repetition of words) and sounds in the little child,| may grow concerned, and inj their anxious efforts to prevent) or cure this repetition, may only) help to make it worse. | Most parents, and other! adults and older children, don't realize that repetition in the; speech of young children is) quite normal, and are apt to re-| yeal their apprehension in front) jof the child. This in turn makes |the child speech conscious and jin trying to avoid repetition as) |something bad, he does more of Control done to make the child feel he is odd, unacceptable or inferior. Most of all, the child needs to feel truly the depths of par- ental love and understanding and that his parents enjoy hear- ing him talk. It is wonderful when they are calm, quiet, ap- preciatiye listeners. a Though most stuttering starts peiore five or six, it can start at any age. It may come, some- times suddenly, from severe ill- ness, fatigue, jealousy, emo- tional shock or strain or for reasons not apparent. Obvi- ously, the more months and years a person has been stutter- ing, the harder it is to cure. Yet some persons, with the aid of; experts or their own sheer self-} effort, do get over stuttering.| Some older children and adults find improvement from reading aloud alone daily. Of course, some children just grow out of it. SPECIALISTS HELP | Many modern schools have) speech specialists who help stuttering children. They seem to secure best results when they are able to get parents and ieachers and the other school) children to co-operate in every- day experiences of the stuttering child. An occasional teacher, remotional upsets? Are you suc- them to try to find ways to make the stuttering child feel more comfortable when he speaks in their presence. If your child stutters notice- ably, try to provide a calm and happy family atmosphere with love and understanding for him. Do all you can to protect him from undue excitement, and to calm him down if he seems jittery. You may need the aid of a physician. RESEARCH WORK .., ... »- Look into the child's daily experiences, Does he seem to have worries and anxieties and cessful in guiding him with a minimum of resistance and a maximum of co-operation? Do read to the stuttering child a great deal, especially to the child under seven or eight, En- courage the older child to read aloud alone Most of all, try to find ways to make the stutterer feel that all is well when he speaks, Instead of telling him to speak more slowly, set the stage subtly so he will. Be so self- controlled when he stutters that he 'hardly will know that you notice that he has any speech' difficulty. | PARENTS' QUESTIONS } Q.
