Judy LaMarsh (top left), Canada's Health Minister, is Canada's woman of the year for the second successive year. Chosen in the annual Canadian Press Year-End poll of women's editors of Cana- dian newspapers, Miss La- Marsh was also named the . By JEAN SHARP Canadian Press Staff Writer Judy LaMarsh, a bit more mellowed and a little less con- troversial, is Canada's woman of the year for the second suc- cessive year. Women's editors of Canadian newspapers, radio and TV sta- tions also picked the outspoken minister of national health and welfare as the most news- worthy woman in public affairs. The Niagara Falls member of Parliament nosed out Charlotte Whitton, defeated in her bid for a fifth term as Ottawa's mayor, in both categories in a Canadian Press year-end poll. Winners in other categories: Sports--Petra Burka, Toronto figure skater; Literature and Art--Simma having a family. Holt, Vancouver author end newspaper woman. Muasic--Singers Maureen For- rester of Montreal and Lois Marshall of Toronto. (tied). Stage, Radio and TV-Actress Kate Reid of Toronto. QUIETER YEAR For Miss LaMarsh, 1964 was a quieter year than 1963, her first. in the Pearson cabinet. That was the year she caught the headlines by leading a Lib- eral "truth squad" which fol- lowed John Diefenbaker during the election campaign, tangling with Ontario's Premier John Robarts over pensions and mak- ing a moderately successful ef- fort to set an example for the public by stopping smoking. Her major chore in '64 was to) bring the long-awaited Canada Pension Plan legislation before most newsworthy woman of 1964. Petra Burka (top (centre), Toronto figure skater, was chosen woman of the year in sports. Simma Holt (top right), a reporter for the Vancouver Sun, was chosen in the literature-art category for her book about approved in principle, then sent to committee for detailed study, and awaits final passage by the Commons. Her department fiso organ- ized the 15-member Consumers' Advisory Council composed largely of representatives of women's organizations to advise the government, from the con- sumer's point of view, on mat- ters in the food and drug fields. Though less inclined to do battle with opposition politi- cians, Miss LaMarsh still made interesting copy from time to! time. She had an audience with PENNER LI LSND IMLS ODS IGE, CET t the Sons of Freedom Douk- hobor sect, Maureen Forres- ter (bottom left) of Montreal and Lois Marshall (bottom centre) of Toronto tied in the music category. Kate Reid (bottom eft) was chosen woman of the year in the act- ing poll. MYERS, Ph.D. In spite of the upsurge in emphasis on phonics in an oc- casional classroom or whole school system, most children in the early grades get very little training in phonics. To arrive at this fact, just examine the primer, first and second read- ers used in most schools, and read the teachers' guide for this set. Surely almost all these early reading books are limited to a very small number of words, from 30 to a few hun- dred, each word being used over and over many times, The assumption is that, if the child repeats these few words often enough, he will learn to read them. The authors of the most widely used basic sets of read- ers have been leaders, some have been pioneers, in the look- and-say method. When some critic attacks this method and clamors for more emphasis on ally, reply with anger. Most of them insist that their system does include the teaching of phonics. True, they do include some, but the amount is very little; and a few of these read- ing experts advise "no phonics till the third grade." However, let it be said to the credit of some authors that, in revising these readers, they are intro- ducing a bit of phonics instruc- tion. | But you, as a parent, can hardly tell your school system) ond, third or fourth grade, has had effective instruction in phonics. As he reads aloud from a book, other than his school reader, or from the newspaper or a food package, does he know by heart all the words he comes to? If he often pauses on a word, is he able to figure it out from the sounds in- dicated by the letters in it? Maybe he doesn't even know the names of the letters; a few second grade children do not. On discovering his lack of skill in recognizing the sounds of letters and groups of letters in words, I hope you don't de- liver a monologue, criticizing the teacher and the school while your impatient child waits. In- stead, I hope you help your child, or find somebody else to help him, learn some of the basic sounds in familiar words. At the moment, you had better tell him the word and spend spend some short periods with him 'later to help him get the hang of recognizing sounds in words. You don't need to be an expert in order to do this, Just use the sense you were born with. On the market are numerous booklets which might help you. One of the children's maga- zines regularly carries some easy helps in phonics. I would warn you against the very ex- pensive sets and gadgets on the market for teaching phonics. Less expensive ones may help! as well or far better. | lers and with the ways by which|with me his driving licence for Judy LaMarsh -- Canada's Woman Of The Year Chosen By Poll Of Canadian Women's Editors what sets of readers to provide|PARENTS' QUESTIONS for your child or by what} Q. Rosy pink slices of brown sugar cured ham are tempting fare teamed up with sweet potato bells, crisp relishes, hot rolls and fruit cake. The amount of ham to buy will be influenced not only by the number of guests present, but also by plans for second day meals and sandwiches. An easy rule to remember is to allow % pound of bone-in ham per serving. Whole hams range in weight from 12 to 16 pounds. |For smaller gatherings either a shank half or a butt balf is available. Ham served buffet style may be sliced either hot or cold. For cold service, the homemaker should look for the words "fully cooked" when she buys the ham. Fully cooked ham does not require additional cooking as purchased. All hams not specifically labelled "fully cooked" are "cook before eating' hams. They should be cooked to an internal temperature of 160 de- grees F. as indicated on a roast meat thermometer to develop the flavor and texture of the ham.
