12 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Seturdey, December 26, 1964 CONTRACT BRIDGE . By B. JAY BECKER (Top record-holder in Masters' Individual Championship Pley) North dealer. Neither sidé vulnerable, EVEN THE HORSE I RIDE IS STOLEN, PONY TAKE: Tew. IF YOU rc >} PP awed Opening lead--two of dia- monds, The squeeze is one of the best plays in bridge, and in its sime plest form is easy to éxécute. Declarer simply cashes his tricks and the squééze takes place automatically. However, the squeeze does not always come about by itself, and declarer must sometimes de- liberately lose a trick in ordér to establish an effective squeéze position. Here is a case whére the declarer elected to do this. South was in six clubs. He should have bid three spades over two notrump, using the cuebid to try to get North to bid a red suit. But South jumped directly to six clubs instead. West led a dianfond to the. ten, king and ace. After draw- ing three rounds of trumps, de- clarer played a diamond to the jack, West showing out. South now realized that he might lose a heart as well as @ diamond if the hearts were not divided 3-3. Accordingly, to cover this possibility, he led the jack of spades and discarded a diamond on it. This play was in line with the general réquire- ment applying to squeezes-- that declarer should be one trick away from having the rest of the tricks, not two. West took the spade with the queen and returned a low heart to the ten and queen.-Declarer now cashed the queen ef dia- monds and tén of clubs to pro- duce this position: a) yr THEN THEY FIGURED WRONG!
