16A THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursday; December 10, 1964 Oshawa"s Donald Jackson 'Best Skater In The World' Don Jackson, left, former World's Figure Skating cham- pion who is now a star with the Ice Follies, presented the Oshawa Civic Auditorium Fund drive with a cheque for $1,000. Next to automobiles, Oshawa is probably most famous in the outside world as the hometown of Don Jackson, one of the all- time greats of the figure skating world, ~ Former World's Amateur Champion, and present star of the Ice Follies, the 23-year-old Jackson didn't even don a pair of blades until he was. nine. His return to Oshawa last year to help promote the Audi- torium Fund was a big lift that contributed to its suecess. He tossed $1,000 into the fund, as well as utilizing his sports. idol appeal to back it. Don's first skates were bor- rowed. He wanted to enter an ice carnival at Mary Street Pub- lic School. Determined to be the fastest skater in his group, he talked his parents into enrolling him at the Oshawa Skating Club. From the beginning, he was a natural. He loved to "spin" and in his words, do '"'tricks" on the ice. At age 12 he announced: "I would like to be a world's cham- pion", He practised, he worked, and r he won. He won club competi- tions and inter-club competi- tions. Then the arena burned to|f the ground, one fateful Septem- ber day in 1953. Without missing a whirl, Don was driven by his father to rinks in Bowmanville, Peterbor- ough. Stouffville and Port Perry to continue his assault on the championship, He was then sent to Ottawa's Mino Club, and, under the tute- lage of professional Otto Gold, he won the Canadian Junior Championship at 14. Don later shifted. .teachers. Under Pierre Brunet of New York, he won the Canadian and North American Championships in 1959, and. finished seventh. in World Competitions. He won a bronze medal in the 1960 Winter Olympics. In 1962, at the age of 21, and under the tutelage of Sheldon Galbraith in Toronto, Don achieved his goal ~--he became the best figure skater in the universe as we know it. One of his peers referred to Don as: "The greatest skater in the history of skating". Don, 48 of. competition, won with a a liant performance, and the 0 .execution of the "Triple ever attempted in Senedak He scored perfect marks on the cards of seven of the -nine judges. He tarned pro with the Ice Follies, and forsook a Portugal vacation last year to return to Oshawa to help out in the Audi- torium drive. .
