The deceased, who was in her 83rd year, had been hospitalized for three months. A daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Axford, the deceased was born at Maple Grove and lived there for many years. She had been a resident of Bowmanville for 10 years before coming to Oshawa a year ago. Miss Axford was a member of Maple Grove United Church. She is survived by a brother- in-law, Charles Snowden, of Oshawa and two nieces, Mrs. Albert Brown (Nellie) of Ham- ilton and Miss Marion Snowden of Toronto. Mr. Downey was edu- cated at Myrtle and came to live in Oshawa as a young man. For seven years he was fruit and vegetable inspector for the Department of Agriculture. The deceased was for iny years an employee of Ge Motors of Canada Ltd., in fhe trim and hardware, department until his retirement in 1954. Mr. Downey was an adherent of Northminster United Church; a member of Local 222, United Auto Workers; and. a member of the Oshawa Horticultural So- ciety. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Ann Anderson, in 1943. Mr. Downey is survived by a daughter, Mrs. John J. Fox (Isobel), of Oshawa, and a granddaughter, Mary Ann Fox, of Toronto. A sister, Mrs. Frank Brittain (Lulu), of London, also survives, Mr. Downey was also prede- ceased by a sister, Mrs. Hattie Fice, of Toronto, and two bro- thers, George, of Oshawa, and Oscar, of Myrtle. The remains are at the McIntosh - Anderson Funeral Home for the funeral service in the chapel Dec. 5, Rev. H. A. Mellow of Northminster United Church will conduct the service. CHAPMAN A resident of Oshawa for 50 years, Robert Wallace Chap- man, 103 Highland avenue, died Thursday at the Oshawa Gen- eral Hospital following a short illness. He was in his 56th year. The late Mr. Chapman was born in England June 2, 1909. His parents were the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Chapman. He was married at St. Gregory's Church, Feb, 26, 1938. He was employed at the Loft- house Pattern Shop since last March. Previously, for 30 years, he worked in the pattern shop at Fittings Ltd. He was a mem- ber of St. Gertrude's, Church. The late Mr. Chapman is sur- vived by his wife, the former Teresa Doyle; two daughters Lynne and Dianne at home; one son Robert of Oshawa; three sisters, Miss Emma Chap- man, Mrs. George Palmer (Doris) and Mrs, Alf Wilkins (Eleanor), all of Oshawa; one brother Herb Chapman of Osh- awa; and two. grandchildren, Robert and Laurie.
