"More scientific sales timing and careful item selection in re- tail advertising can produce sales increases of 10 to 15 per cent," Mark R. Arnold, vice- president, retail and classified department, bureau of adver- tising, ANPA, said today. Mr. Arnold's assessment of greater retail sales to be achieved through. scientific planning of newspaper advertis- ing was offered today in con- nection with publication of the Bureau's "14th Annual Time Table of Retail Opportunities', incorporating the 1965 News- paper Advertising Planbook. The Time Table provides a 4- step program for charting sales and advertising month by month with appropriate work space in which records may be kept. It contains data on seasonal sales patterns for 17 Canadian store types and 34 merchandise lines. Making the Time Table of im- mediate, practical use to the re- tailer are 15 monthly calendar worksheets for the period No- vember, 1964, through January, 1965. Each monthly worksheet reminds the retailer of selling opportunities by listing tradi- tional merchandising events and 'promotion dates for the month. More than 131,000 copies of the Time Table distributed to retail- ers in the U.S. and Canada since its first publication in 1951. "In case after case, we have found that one of the greatest differences between the more successful retail operations and the less successful was the de- gree to which adyertising was carefully geared to selling op- portunities through planned newspaper advertising designed to reach the consumer with sales information at the right time," Mr. Arnold said. The Planb is acc by a special presentation titled "How to Capture More Cus- tomers in '65". Offering further information and suggestions to the retail advertiser, the pre- sentation shows how retailers can anticipate customer buying patterns.
