|Boredom Plane Movies~ By BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD (AP) -- It all started because a theatre chain _ UNHARMED Viola 'Walker, 59, of Vine- mount, Ont., has been fe- ported among the group of missionaries flown from rebel- held §Stanleyville to Leopold- ville. News of Mrs, Walker's situation came from Rev. George Thomas of Toronto, Canadian secretary of the Un- evangelized Fields Mission. (CP. I have looked back over my television calendar, noting pro- grams I have watched since Jan. 1, and I find -there were appallingly few memorable mo- ments.among all those hours. Once again, however, I would. pick The Defenders as the best series, It has its ups and downs, but usually it has a recogniz- able point of view and it is in- variably a professional job. Most impressive single program of the last 1014 months has been, I think, The Louvre last week. Dick Van Dyke and Danny Kaye share my vote for "best television performer," al- though The Danny Kaye Show must share my top honors in the variety category with Holly- wood Palace. BONANZA 'INTERESTING' Bonanza, the perennial front- running horse opera, probably is the most interesting western week in and week out. Lucille Ball still has. no tele- vision peer in her special area of comedy while Bob Hope re- mains king in his. Andy Wil- liams is the most engaging voc- alist and his program, in color, is a delight to the eye. Robert Vaughn of The Man from U.NC.L.E. and Jim Na- bors of Gomer Pyle, U:S.M.C. are the two brightest new male series stars, while Elizabeth Montgomery of Bewitched must take the blue ribbon in the dis- taff comedy division. Today is, for me, far and away the most interesting day- time program; Walter Cronkite the easiest newscaster to listen to. While I'm picking, I should add that among all of this sea- son's new programs -- by and Jarge a mediocre assortment-- my favorite by far is The Rogues. Recommended tonight: That Was The Was, NBC, 9:30-10 EST--a topi- cal comedy revue of the last seven days. or so; telephone hour, NBC, 10-11 musical hour with Robert Young, host, and Earl Wrightman among the soloists, Stock Exchange Rule Adopted WASHINGTON (AP)--A rule restricting the operations of specialists on the New York and American stock exchanges has been adopted formally by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Specialists, who execute or- ders for brokers as well as buy- ing and selling for themselves, must limit the latter type of transactions to those '"'reason- ably necessary to permit him to maintain a fair and orderly market." : Some specialists were criti- cized for their transactions which deepened the drop in prices on the day President John F. Kennedy was assassi- nated a year ago. It was a scandal] involving specialists on the American ex- change several years ago which set off a campaign for tighter rules governing all phases of the securities business. The rule, formally, adopted Sunday, will take effect in Jan- uary. The rule applies only to the New York exchanges, since an exemption was written in for all others. which are classified as regional exchanges by the SEC People's 36 SIMCOE ST. NORTH We'll take care of Your Man this Christmas CLOTHING FOR MEN AND YOUNG MEN Week That]- operator became bored on long air flights from the East Coast to Hollywood, David Flexer operated movie houses in and near Memphis, Tenn., and during his many trips to see the Hollywood prod- uct he mused on how a plane cabin resembled a projection Started room. Why not show movies to occupy the droning hours in flight? That was in 1957. Flexer spent four years and $1,000,000 to devise a method of showing movies on aircraft. The system had to be lightweight, compact, automatic and meet the appro- val of the Federal Aviation Agency. The result was inflight Motion Pictures, which began service on TWA flights to Eu- rope in 1961, With Inflight you see a movie much as in a theatre. The stew- ardess hangs a screen at the head of the aisle--one for first class, one for tourist. The Ca- bin is darkened and the movie begins to unreel from a projec- tion hole near the ceiling. Each passenger is equipped with ear- phones for the sound. The sound is the least effective part of the system; I found it diffi- cult to catch the British ac- cents in Murder Ahoy, But In- flight says it is installing new earphones that will give a bet- ter, stereophonic sound, The success of Inflight gave rise to other systems. Ameri- can Airlines has devised Astro- vision, which gives the passen- ger the option of watching a movie on an individual nine- inch television-type screen or using earphones to listen to classical. or pop music on stereo. Continental Airlines uses a similar system.
