20 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Fridey, November 20, 1964 _- CNR President Gordon Raps New Labor Code DON HANRIGHT OTTAWA (CP)--CNR Presi- dent Donald Gordon has sharply criticized the new fed- eral labor code, still before Par- Hiament. , He said that in many ways the bill "'seems to produce some utterly impractical situations between employees and man- agement." Mr, Gordon's remarks were made last week in a closed la- bor . management conference sponsored by the Economic Council of Canada. The council shortly will pub- lish speeches at the conference, along with a series of research reports on labor - management relations in Europe, the United States and Canada. The head of the Crown-owned CNR was commenting in the conference on one of these re- search reports when he di- verted from his main theme, to say in part: "The labor standards code in- corporated in Bill 126 now be- Police Chief Supported PORT ELGIN, Ont. Charles Riley--only re- maining member of the town's three-man police force--be kept on his job pending a commis- sion hearing next month. Chief Riley's dismissal by town council was to be effective Thursday. "This I believe to be wrong." The federal bill would apply to all labor areas under federal jurisdiction, including railways. Its key provisions: A mini- mum wage rate of $1.25 an hour; a standard eight-hour day and 40-hour week, with time and a half for overtime; eight general holidays with pay, and two weeks annual vacation with pay after every complete year of employment. TORONTO (CP) -- The pro- posed federal labor code is an attempt to establish minimum standards rather than improve the working conditions of the majority, Labor Minister Mac-|* Eachen said Thursday. He said the bill was designed to fill a gap between provincial and federal labor legislation and to build a sound economic base for all Canadians. He told the West Toronto Ki- wanis Club the legislation will affect about 380,000 persons. ee ae, the _Hampshire Avon fishingjroach. BY STEELWORKERS Walkout Talk Attacked HAMILTON (CP) -- Officials of the United Steelworkers of America (CLC) Thursday at- tacked rumors of a_ possibility of "spontaneous. walkouts" at the Steel Company of Canada as "attempts to sabotage con- tinuing negotiations between Steleo and the steelworkers." The negotiating committee of Local 1005 issued orders for its members to stay on the job. Negotiations for a new work contract for the 10,000 Stelco Hamilton workers represented by the union are being contin- ued by sub-committees of the company and the union, mem- bers were told in a leaflet. Members: of Local 1005 voted in favor of strike action in a ballot Monday and Tuesday should conciliation fail. SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont.
