Wadd gh temrved ~ = © King Faster Spedioatn, lo Dear Dr. Molner: I am preg- nant and have an awful weight problem. My ankles swell. By nighttime I can feel the swell- ing even behind my. knees. In trying to keep my weight down, what would be the proper calorie intake?--Mrs. T.W, Too much weight in 'preg- nancy is a hazard, both from the standpoint of safety and of comfort However, the swollen. ankles and legs could be due to some- thing else -- although I could speak more intelligently about | this if I had some idea of what your weight is, how much you have gained, and how far along you are in your pregnancy The swelling could be due to inadequate veins in the legs the pregnancy (it is quite pos- sible for such pressure in the abdomen to restrict circulation at that point.) I presume that you allready are aware that round garters or other tight garments that interfere with circulation should be avoided. Just to be safe, however, consult your doctor regularly to guard against the possibility that the swelling is due to faulty functioning of the kid- neys. If you have headaches, dizziness or disturbances of vision, you certainly must see your doctor without. delay. As to the weight alone, an increase of 20 pounds for the entire pregnancy:is a. reason- able amount: Naturally. this (varicose veins, for example) means that the increase should This could be complicated bycbe gradual, with little gain at DONALD DUCK EUREKA! | | | | | ~ ee Distributed by King Features Syndicate, ig 1 A SPECIAL ING ON SHAVI ASKED ME TO INVENT! Sacrifice bidding is a much neglected department. of the game. Apparently a psycho- logical barrier prevents most players from undertaking a con- tract which they know in ad- vance is sure to be defeated. Yet it is clearly demon- strable that sound sacrifice bid- ding pays in the long run. If you know that your side is about to suffer a substantial loss on a particular hand, it must surely be better to incur a lesser loss if possible, even if this means that you must take a beating at'some doubled con- tract. Let's say you're playing rub- ber bridge and have the South hand. If you and your partner submit quietly when the oppo- nents reach six spades, the rub- ber will end and East-West will chalk up 700 for the rubber, 750 for the slam, 100 honors, and 180 for the trick score. This comes to a tidy 1,730 points. But let's suppose that you and your partner are not the méek type, that you slug at times, and that you don't always let the opponents assume command of the bidding simply because they have the better cards. : Then in that case the bidding might go as shown, and while you would come out of the fra- cas somewhat bloodied, your head would still be unbowed. You would lose 700 points on the deal all right, going down four, but not 1,730 points. And this saving would be a real one, not just a theoretical one. You could point with pride te North's double of one spade, preparing the way for the even> tual sacrifice; to your own dots ble of five hearts, encouraging partner to save in hearts if he was so minded; and to North's six notrump bid, asking you to sacrifice. at seven clubs of hearts, depending on your hand. Of course, you won't ever get rich losing 700 points a hand, but just the same, you'll last longer if you avoid losing 1,730 points a hand. Without knowing your height, an how active you are, I can't be too precise about the calorie intake, but for most women 1,000 to 1,500 calories a day will be adequate. The important point is to be sure that your diet includes the things you need, with empha- sis on protein (lean meat, fowl, fish, eggs, cheese), cal¢ium (milk . and cottage cheesh -- skim milk has its full quota of calcium), and vitamins. Fruit, vegetables, fruit juices } and salads will supply vitamins not included in the other foods just mentioned. You may have to restrict salt. Ask your doctor about that. He also can advise whether you should have extra calcium or vitamins.
