This most colorful of former Tory ministers has reacted with gusto to delighted yells of "bon- kers" from Labor members 'in the new Parliament. The appearance of Hogg on swearing-in day was like the passage of a supersonic aircraft creating a. continuous -- sonic boom, only that with Hogg it was "bonkers - bonkers - bon- kers!"" and the erstwhile Lord Hailshaw replied: "bonkers!"' Hogg's pre-election comment that anyone voting Labor Oct. 15 would be bonkers will prob- ably, live as a sort of classic in political sayings and no one seems more pleased than the irrepressible honorable gentle- man himself. « Most Canadians would in- terpret the* comparatively new slang term as something like "nutty" but the former educa- tion minister has carefully ex- plained to his bishop, of all people, that it refers not to in- telligence quotient but to relia- Miss R. Mervyn Steckwood, Anglican Bishop of Southwark, had criticized racial prejudice in the election. Hogg, self-des- cribed "constituent" bishop, came back: "If I may offer a suggestion to the bishop, when he next differs from the electors gen- erally or in any particular con- stituency, it would be better if he referred fo them simply as 'ponkers,' an animadversion which, if I may say so, refers neither to their 'I. Q.'.. . nor to the state of their souls but to the reliability of their judg- ment." With the Tories out of office, Hogg now is Opposition spokes- man on education in Sir Alec Douglas - home's shadow cab- inet, losing the £5,000 ($15,000) ministerial salary. One of Britain's most famed lawyers, Hogg, 57, didn't have long to wait for a case when he returned to his law office. He was retained by Randolph Churchill in an action brought by the London Daily Sketch against the son of Sir Winston and the Weekly Spectator. Ran- dolph is a spectator cctumnist.
