& 'THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesdey, November 11, 1964 Grower Develops Quick-Wrap Device A new method of wrapping Christmas trees has been veloped by veteran grower Sam Manetta of 'Pontypool. - The system is much faster than h , Mr. Manetta gays, and thousands of trees shipped from this area within the next few weeks will use his system. "Mr. Manetta developed a fun- nel device that employs "Vex- ar" plastic netting, which is produced by Du Pont of Can- ada at Whitby. The tree is fed into the mouth of the funnel and pulled through the neck. As the compressed tree emerges from the neck it is enveloped in a sleeve of '"Vexar". To accommodate various sizes of tree, Mr. Manetta has de- veloped a system whereby inter- changeable necks of several diameters can be quickly fitted to the funnel, A retarding de- vice is fitted around the funnel neck to control the feed of the mesh. He devised his "retard- er" by passing a rope through de-| spring a and then inserting the to cut lengths of hose. He attached this device to the funnel by retaining wires. BRIGHT FUTURE Mr. Manetta sees a bright future for this development, specially in areas of labor short- age and when early snow puts a premium on the fast wrap- ping of trees. The new system will be used most extensively in the Ponty- pool region, near Peterborough, one of Canada's main growing areas. By using the Manetta device, growers estimate they will wrap as many trees per day with three men as they formerly did with five, thus compensating for a shortage of harvesting labor. The tree is fed into the mouth of the funnel and pulled through the neck. As the com- pressed tree emerges from the neck it is enveloped in a sleeve of "Vexar"'. No tying is in- volved. All experimental devices will accommodate any size of tree; the diameter of the 'Vexar" sleeve varies with the tree size. PROTECTS TREES In addition to increasing wrap- ping speed, the sleeve protects the tree from damage during loading and unloading by keep- ing all branches uniformly com- pressed. As a result, the frozen trees can be dragged or piled without danger of snapping off protruding branches. Trees packaged in "Vexar" also pre- sent an attractive well-rounded package, Growers in the Pontypool area concentrate on Scotch Pine. Plantations cover thous- ands of acres -- about 1,000 trees to the acre. Trees are shipped to all regions of Can- ada and the United States by tractor-trailer and railway. More than. 8,000,000 Christmas trees are exported from Canada to the United States annually. (CP)--Auctions of Ontario's 1964 tobacco crop will open Thursday and stay open regardless of feelings about market condition, Stanley Smith, chairman of the Ontario Flue- Cured Tobacco Growers Marketing Board, told growers Tuesday. Mr. Smith addressed mass meetings of farmers at Aylmer, 10 miles east of St. Thomas, and here, about 20 miles south Auction Opens Thursday "Tf you decide you want to| do something about it the place is at your zone meetings next spring when you elect your di- rectors--you are not saddled with us,' said Mr. Smith. Vowing to keep the auction floors open, Mr. Smith cited market interruptions in 1958, 1961 and last year, when farm- ers, angered by price fluctua- tions, forced a two-week closing of the exchanges, "Every time the auctions TO ADDRESS LIONS District Governor Terry Evans of Havelock will pay his official visit to the Lions Club of Ajax at its meeting tonight. The purpose of his visit is to advise and assist President Scotty Wilson, Sec- retary Peter Pos, the officers, directors and members of the club on matters pertaining to administration and the Lions' program of humanitarian the growers, have losi," he said, : The chairman said it was his duty to carry out the policy set by a majority of directors but he was not in favor of the board's decision last week on an open market without a plebi- scite of Ontario's 4,000 - odd rowers. Mr. Smith predicted a 'fairly good market' and said the largest buyer of Ontario to- bacco has publicly described the 1964 harvest as a fine crop that should sell well. Director Lyal Tait said the industry's troubles were caused by a split within the board-- collective versus independent marketing. He said he was op- posed to open auctions that "put buyers.in a very good bargain- ing position with no responsibil- of Brantford, to explain re- versal of the board's plans for a plebiscite on the question of have closed in mid-market we, 'ities." Aim of the expedition, Ice- pack VI, was to study reverber- ations of sound in water under ice. "At first we thought it was going to be a complete wash- out," says Thomas Hughes of the lab team. "We achieved the main task but others we could However, expedition leader Ray Lrown says the limited achievements were "well worth the effort." "It all contributes to the un- derstanding of the problems and use of sound under water in detecting submarines and been as high as 60. Added to this we had 2 per cent less sunshine, The ice just did not break up." When the expedition flew into Resolute Bay there was five feet of shorefast ice where last year there had been none. The icebreaker d'Iberville broke the ice out of the bay and a navy demolition crew cleared a small channel to allow pas- sage of small landing cr: arrived she had to anchor half a mile offshore. Expedition members were transferred from shore by heli- copter and the heavy equipment went aboard by lighter. Mr. Hughes says the team had hoped to do its work in the Beaufort Sea (north of Alaska and the Yukon) "but the heavy att Lae when the John A. Mac --. {ce prevented this. Instead the experiments were done in Vis- count Melville Sound, not far from Resolute. The Best Place To Save 312% 9 Re: SAVINGS ACCOUNTS VICTORIA and GREY TRUST. 308 DUNDAS ST.
