Then. in 1899 the Whitby Institute was organized, thus making the Whitby Branch the second oldest Women's Insti- tute in the world. Since then it thas spread to Europe and prac- member én her own Branch, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth is an Honorary Member. In South Ontarie there are 12 branches with an approximate member- ship of 375. Its motto "For Home and Country" speaks for itself, Un- like most organizations it is non- political and mnon-denomina- tional. The aims and object of the Institute is to promote that knowledge of domestic science to a better understanding of economics and hygiene, value of foods, and in carrying on any line of work which has for its objects the betterment of con- ditions surrounding <ommunity life.
