| Range Clean-Up Project Cooking On All Bumers By ELEANOR ROSS Comes holiday time and kit- whens come alive with rich, sa- vory smells--that is if the gas range is in order! Don't wait until the last minute to de a tune-up job. We consulted Mangaret Spader, the home service consultant to the Gas Appliance Manufac- turers Association. . According to Margaret, the best care a stove can receive is @ good, sudsy bath. Many cooks "touch up" the range after every use, so dirt and grease do not accumulate. But if the burners are slow to light or the even isn't shining, a good eleaning is in order. Don't start the cleaning job while the oven is hot, Margaret mdvises. The sudden change from hot to cold may cause the see of the porcelain ena- mel. ' The utensil supports, bowls and drip trays can be taken to the kitchen sink or placed in a @ish washer for a _ thorough cleaning. MRS. CLAYTON LEE Women's Christian If some of the burner ports are clogged, clean them with a pipe-cleaner or a coarse wire. If the pilot lights are slow to light, check the flash tubes to see that they are properly aligned with the burner. ON TO THE OVEN After the top is clean and reassembled, move on to the oven where the racks and bot- tom are removable for easy cleaning. : A soapy bath ror these parts and the oven lining is all that's needed, unless burned - on grease has been allowed to ac- cumulate, In that case, there are sev- eral commercial products avai- lable that will ease that job. It : important to follow instruc- ons. Or, if preferred, household ammonia, placed in a small glass container and left in the oven overnight, will loosen the residue and make the job much easier. An ounce of prevention will save hours. of labor on clean- ing ranges, it is pointed out. TWO 'CULPRITS' For instance, baking fruit pies and roasting meat and poultry are two things that fre- quently lead to a tedious oven- cleaning job. A tidy cook can do both jobs without creating a major clean- up chore. To preyent run-overs by fruit pies, the best precaution is te make sure the two crusts are sealed correctly. Another pro- tection against pie run-overs is to lay a piece ox aluminum foil slightly langer than the pie pan beneath it on the oven rack. Margaret Spader warns against covering the bottom of the oven or the entire oven rack with aluminum foil, be- cause gas range manufacturers have spent a lot of time in de- signing gas ovens in which the circulating heat. will produce uniform browning. Too gener- ous use of the foil over racks | STUDENTS' OWN SPEED VANCOUVER (CP) -- Teach- ing primary school children by |level of achievement rather than by grade is being tried at John Henderson elementary school here. Recommended Degrees And for meat, Margaret rec- ommends low - temperature roasting (275-325 degrees). At this temperature, fat and vapor will not "bake" onto the oven's lining. A quick wipe with paper towels should remove any de- posit that results from the cooking of meat, THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesdoy, November 10,1964 5A MRS.
