OTST 35 Unitarians Hear Thomas " T. D. "Tommy" Thomas spoke to Oshawa Unitarians Sunday on his recent visit to Africa Although Mr. and Mrs. Thomas visited several coun- tries in Africa during their tour, Mr. Thomas concentrated on explaining the political set- up and conditions in the Union of South Africa, which was of rticular interest since the 'eliowship is deeply concerned with the question of civil rights. There are three political par- ties in South Africa, two of which support the principle of aparthied, the third party "Pro- gressives" oppose this principle, but have only one seat in the Parliament at the present ~~ -said Mr. Thomas. Since passing of the infamous S agth communism" Law, which al- lows anyone critical of govern- ment policies to be thrown in| jail, without trial or right of ap-| peal, for five or six years, it! has virtually become a police} state, he said. Mr, Thomas said the economy | is prosperous, there being vir-| tually no unemployment, and| the white population enjoys on highest standard of living any- where in the world. This is mainly due to the exploitation of the native, resulting in an} abundance of cheap labor, he} said. Even foreign companies) operating in the Union follow) the practice of paying the color-| ed worker a fraction of the| wage paid to a white person for the same job, he said. For instance at the GM plant at East London, a colored worker | on the assembly line would re- ceive around $18 or $20 per) week, while a white man doing the same job beside him would receive about $90 per week, said Mr. Thomas. EDUCATION Education is. compulsory for white children, but although available, is not compulsory for the native population, said Mr. Thomas. He concluded by say-| ing that aparthied cannot suc- look for an educated ae wil, not accept such a principle) and the reign of the white) race is swiftly drawing to a) - THE OSHAWA TIMES, uy close in South Africa. During the discussion period which followed the address, Mr. Thomas told how the white le, both Afrikaans and Brit- European, were arming themselves and their families in the United States and festern countries in such f 7. Mr. Thomas was thanked by Tan Tucker, on behalf of the Fellowship. Comments On Juries Crown Attorney Bruce Affleck | said today he feels coroner's| jurors are unfamiliar with their role at inquests. "There has been a lot of criti- | cism recently of stupid .coron- er's verdicts," said Mr. Af- fleck, '"'My feeling is that in- adequate verdicts are due to in- adequate instructions from cor- oners."' Mr. Affleck participated in a three-<lay course last week in Toronto for a group of 55 coron- | ers in Ontario. He lectured on| evidence, acted as interrogator | at a mock inquest held in Whit- by and was a member of a four- man panel. "An extensive part of the pro- gram was directed to coronet's | problems, how to instruct a jury | and procedural difficulties," said Mr. Affleck. He said it was probably the, best course ever held for cor-) oners and added that courses of | this type 'definitely improve" | coroners. Mr, Affleck said the Crown Attorneys executive has started) courses for Crown Attorneys in Ontario, prompted by the suc- cess of the coroners' courses. Judge A. C. Hall of Ontario | County was a panel member! Friday at a Crown Attorney meeting on trial techniques and tactics, said Mr. Affleck. Emu, Rangaioo Kick Up Fuss MELBOURNE (CP).-- The two central fvures on Austra- lia's national coat of arms, the| kangaroo and the emu, are) causing havoc on big sheep ranches in Northwest Victoria. | Graziets are employing men| to shoot thousands of kanga-) roos, but the law protects the emu, a large, flightless bird, similar to the ostrich, which is! capable of great running speed. Graziers say the emus and kangaroos are eating and spoil- ing sheep feed and breaking down fences. Drought condi- tions in the north brought the emus to the district in thou- sands. They are wandering in flocks of about 50 in sheep pas- tures and in some places out- numbering the kangaroos. ._ SHORT AND SWEET WELLAND, Ont.
