10 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Seturdey, October 17, 1964 BERRA OUSTED Keane Resigns As Cardinals Manager HERSCHEL NISSENSON ' Seta Press Sports Wirter world di- Friday's bombshells that "alta bos ae Keane and Y' as ex: managers, the grapevine whis- pered that "Keane wil be the it of New new pl Durocher will succeed him as field boss of St. Louis Cardinals. Reliable sources reported that Keane had the edge for the Yan- kee job over Alvin Dark, ousted earlier this month as manager of San Francisco Giants. Durocher was known to be the favorite of St. Louis owner Gus- sie Busch but the Cards' Bi general manager, Bob How sam, was rumored to be push- i Charlie Metro, Chicago ite Sox scout and veteran minor league pilot. Before the second-guessers had much of a chance to re- hash the World Series, Keane marched into Busch's St. Louis office and handed in his resig- nation, which he said was writ- ten several weeks ago Not long after, Berra got the bad news from Yankee general manager Ralph Houk that the American League champs had decided to replace him after a one-year trial. The 39-year-old Yogi immediately signed a two- year contract as a special field consultant under Houk. MANY DEVELOPMENTS In addition to the Keane- Berra announcements: Cleveland Indians, rumored to be moving to Seattle, de- cided to remain in Cleveland at least through 1965. Eight wealthy Milwau- kee businessmen asked base- ball commissioner Ford Frick to help them arrange negotia- tions for the purchase of the Braves, whose present owners reportedly plan to move the club to Atlanta. a eat aearnaeaar apaadie ccapiesanecnemteieaionr tate ia Paap tae coc aests A ia ae eee Pittsburgh Pirates said they wanted Keane to replace Danny Murtaugh, who re- signed as manager because of il! health. Bing Devine, fired in August as the Cardinals' general man- ager, was named Executive of The Year for the second con- secutive year by the other ma- jor league general managers. Keane said his decision. to step down was made by him and his wife Sept. 28 as a re- sult of "a number of little things--none really important." The 53-year-old Keane became the likely successor to Berra as soon as the Yankees made their announcement. Houk said Keane and Dark were among four possibilities being consid- ered. H. Campbell | SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' | HOW HIGH IS UP? -- The thrills and roars of the 1964 World Series are barely hushed, when up comes headline news in baseball that almost shocks the ordinary fan. They gave Yogi Berra one year as of the Yank -- he still won the American League -- and right away he's booted out! He won the American League pennant -- and had to put on a Frank Merriwell finish in the home -stretch to do it -- he put the World Series to the limit of seven games, even with |games out of first place. |with losing the World Series," jing major league teams and |down an offer to manage in the Cardinal farm system. Houk said the Yankees prob- | ably would name Berra's suc- | cessor within a week. In St. Louis, Busch' ap- pointed a.six-man committee to | screen Cardinal candidates. The idea of dropping Berra, Houk said, began in mid-August Repeats Win, GM Softball Trim and Hardware captured their second consecutive Gen- eral Motors Office Softball Meet Hawks On Sunday League championship on Thurs- day at Alexandra Park, defeat-| ing Data Processing 13- 6. It was| the fifth and deciding game of | the final series. In the 1963 finals, Trim and} Hardware also defeated Data Processing but in three straight games, The first title in 1961 was taken by Purchasing, while Accounts. Payable won '62 honors. The first game went to Trim} and Hardware 12-7, Data Pro- when the Yankees were 54 "The move had nothing to do Houk said.. 'Friday morning was the first Yogi knew about it. In his new job, he'll be scout- |looking at some 'of the players in our farm system." "T don't mind," Berra said, although he had expressed the hope earlier in the week that Whitey Ford, his ace, sidelined by injury and a few of his other regulars not in top shape -- and they reward him with dismissal. It's true -- Y,ogi was '"'one of the boys" -- has been for umpteen years, so he couldn't be expected to move in with a great big stick and be "rough" but he did win the American League pennant and he pushed the World Series to the limit. It begins to look as if the Yankee bosses "'want blood" -- and across the continent, supporters of the Yankees are going to falter in their affiliations. After all, Yogi Berra helped establish the Yankee regime and reputation -- to kick him out, so ruthlessly, is going to annoy the average, normal, baseball-minded fan. Maybee the Yankee bosses have got too big for their boots -- they figure they should always win? | We've got news for them, the National League will be the most powerful circuit of the two, for the next five years. We didn't think St. Louis Cards was the best team in the National League this season -- but they won out with a last-drive splurge and their momentum carried them through to the World Series title. Yankees can fire Berra if they like -- and apparently they liked -- but they'll not even finish in the first place next year. So who will they blame then? IN CONTRAST -- Johnny Keane won the World Series as man@gzer of the St. Louis Cardinals and he has shocked the baseball world by resigning his managerial post of the World Series champions. This was a real jolt to the baseball fans, especially in the National League, It'll likely take the rest of the winter season before we know just who will be the man- ager of some of the various Big League teams. Yankees, Cardinals and Pirates all have openings. Some of the others are not really definite. You can add to this list ~ the ailing Freddy Hutchison may be replaced as Manager of the Cincin- nati Redlegs and Bob Kennedy of Chicago Cubs has not been signed for next season, as of now. Leo Durocher is available -- could be going back to St. Louis -- but that still leaves a few gaps in the list, so the "hot stove league" boys are going to have a@ fine winter. Meanwhile, we've got to give Johnny Keane credit. They can discount his ability and his choices all they wish -- but the fact remains that the Cardinals went out and won the World Series for Johnny Keane, as well as for themselves -- so he must be a "good guy". The re-action of the St. Louis fans -- currently. all het- "up over the World Series victory -- could have a big bearing on the goings-on of the next few weeks. One thing seems apparent -- if "Yogi"' | spending he would be rehired. "I'll be the year at home. Where can you get a job like |this? I don't have to sign in or |punch a clock.
