12 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Fridey, October 9, 1964 "HELPED TURN TABLE ON THE CARDS Fay York Yankees' Phil Mel Stottlemyre, pose in the Linz (te) and their pitcher, dressing room, flor they hed SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' ALL TIED UP! That's the situation in the 1964 World Series, following the first two games played in the ball yard of the National League winners. N.Y. Yankees came up with a championship brand. performance yesterday. They fielded well, they had next-to-sensational pitching from Me! Strottle- myre and most important of all they bunched their its when they would do the most good. Yankees got the big blows from the right men in the right spot and that was .the difference. We enjoyed the Joe Pepitone incident at the plate. Yesterday, they ran a picture to try and prove that umpire Bill McKinley had biew one at first base. Yesterday, if he did -- it was the same gent-in-blue, but this time, his decision favored the Yankees. At this distance, with only a TV reproduction as a guide, we really haven't much ground to stand on -- but we got to thinking, if it was the third strike and Pepitone swung at it -- (the doubtful part) -- why wasn't he called out ? It was mighty confusing -- especially when McKinley (so they reported) said the ball struck Pepitone on the right leg -- while Pepitone insisted the ball did hit him -- but it. was the left leg. Cards insisted that the ball ticked Pepitone's bat, before it struck him. This would have made it a foul ball -- and no out". AT ANY RATE, the teams get a rest today and then they go back at it, in Yankee Stadium on Saturday. This makes it @ 3-out-ol-5 series, from this point, so the tension will increase and we are apt to see some lively action, not just°on the dia- mond, but from the sidelines. Meanwhile, the NHL All-Star game is scheduled for Saturday night, with Stanley Cup champions, Toronto Maple Leafs, taking on the pick of the rest. This makes the Thanksgiving week-end loom as a turn- ing point. They'll come close to settling the World Series in baseball, this week-end, but in the meantime, the National Hockey League's All-Star game will have been played and the 1964-65 Stanley Cup season will be under way. BRIGHT BITS: If you are a football (rugby) fan, better take a stroll down to the Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium tonight. They've got three games scheduled, starting at 4:30 P.m., with the local Secondary Schoo! "Collegiate" teams sup- plying the entertainment -- and it's good... . BROOKLIN CONCRETES open their All-Ontario Intermediate "C" finals against Capreol, at Brooklin Park, tomorrow night at 7:30 e'clock and they go again at one o'clock on Sunday after- noon ... OSHAWA GENERALS are in action tonight, when they open their OHA Junior "A" schedule, at Niagara Falls, They are in Montrea! on Scie night to play Junior Cana- diens and then on Tuesday, the local hockey fans get their chance, with Montreal's Junior Habs playing back here against the Generals, on Tuesday night, at Bowmanville Arena. _ _WOODBINE RACE RESULTS | played leading roles yester- hcg in leading Yankees to an victory over St. Louis Sereeuisie even up the World Series at one win apiece.
