FED BY HAND The press prints "fine edi- tions" of poetry, medieval spir- itual writings, histories of the Church Fathers; and also plainer editions of liturgical books for the English-speaking laity in the OSB. The actual printing operation is a whimsical but cunning blend of venerable and modern practices. The press on which the finest work is done has an automatic feeding mechanism capable of printing hundineds of sheets an hour. "But the auto- matic feed is detached and the damp handmade sheets are fed in slowly and carefully after stopping the machine between impressions," the printer said. The nuns wear their usual habits as they scurry about the machinery. However, long aprons protect the snowy-white nortions of the habit. After the sheets are dmied and, in the case of books, bound. illuminated letters and designs are added. Much of this is done by two laymen-- Harry and Margaret Adams, two Britons who collaborate with. Stanbrook Press. They count noses. People who buy the paper regularly because they like to read it. No projections. No guesswork, An ABC audit shows where every newspaper goes. They don't count free copies. They don't count the fellow who comes in for 20 copies because his picture was in the paper. That's not normal circulation. They audit a newspaper's books, check branch offices, delivery men and news boys. The figure they come up with is an accurate count of the people you can expect to see and read your ad, That's the way it should be. That's the audi- ence you're paying for. And that's the audi- ence you reach when you advertise in daily newspapers. If you'd like to know exactly what audience your advertising dollars will buy in this newspaper, ask for a copy of our current Audit Bureau of Circulations report.
