Belleville's only successful inning was the 8th when Moon, Weston and Mavety all hit safe- ly in succession to produce their two runs, which at the time, tied the score. Belleville had lone runners on base in: the Oth, 1ith and 12 frames, but couldn't score again as Stone was at his best in the clutches. Latchford, Belleville's mound ace, fanned 17 batters and gave up 11 hits. Merchants won the game on their ability to get their hits in the right places. Ted Lutton singled and Bob Reid doubled in the first frame but Oshawa didn't break the 0-0 deadlock until the bottom of the 6th inning when Stone opened with a walk. With two out, Lutton singled, an error of the 12th. Jim McConkey Stone drew another walk. Latch- Jack Fisher but Ted Lutton's single scored McConkey with the winning run. FIFTH AND FINAL GAME The fifth and deciding game of the series in Belleville on Monday night proved a night- mare for the homesters and their fans and a weird affair for the scorekeeper, as Oshawa 16-5 triumph over Belleville. Jim McConkey- pitched the win for the Merchants. He fan- ned eight batters and gave up seven hits, for only three runs. Vaughan's double and another by Soule, plus an infield out and Mavety's single, gave Belle- ville their first two runs in the sixth' inning--and at the time they were trailing 11-0. The homesters got their next run down in 1-2-3 order but they -lwon the game in the bottom singled to open the inning and ford struck out Rofer Woods and pounded out 14 hits for their) and scored on a single Hurst, In the 9th, Muirhead tripled, Hunter doubled and the latter scored on Moon's sacrifice fly, for their fifth and final run. Oshawa broke in front against Vaughan, starting pitcher, for four runs on a walk, three errors and hits by Ted Lutton and Ron Jones. Merchants added two in the second, another in the third and four more in the fifth; as they treated Belleville's succession of pitchers each to a barrage of base blows, while the home- sters, to make matters worse, were guilty of some loose field- ing. Two in the eight and three more in the 9th inning, complet- ed Oshawa's total. Jack Fisher, Ted Lutton, Johhy Hogg and Ron Jones all hit well for the Merchants while all the others also contributed, either with the odd hit or by drawing a walk. | OSHAWA--Fisher, ss; Lutton, \If; Hogg, cf; Reid, 1b; Whiteley, 3b; Etchells c¢; Dowe, | 2b; Jones, rf; McConkey, p; Mit- chell, ss. Against Irish Oshawa Vikings defeated To-| game from start-to-finish. The team has been in hard practice for some weeks and new tech- niques, with clever movements, proved the hours spent were! worthwhile, Five of the Oshawa players deserve -special mention for their individual efforts and fine team work. They were captain Bill Lockwood, winger Ted M- Lean, backs Tom Olinyk and Garney Gunn, and scrum-half Bruce McArthur. Fullback Terry Kelly was re- sponsible for some fine kicking -- he converted two trys against a strong wind -- and front row props Mark Mally and Wayne Voege were always well up with the ball and towers of strength in lose scrums. Fifteen minutes after kick-off McLean made a 30-yard run, beating four men, to touch down for the first try. He was passed the ball by Lockwood, who had it after a scrum. A conversion kick failed. Five minutes later, Olinyk put the ball over the line, following some fine back field passing. Kelly converted this try, putting the Vikings ahead 8-0. Early in the second half, Gunn put the ball between the posts, after a pass from Olinyk, This was the result of practised tac- tics. McLean took the ball from an Irish player at the half-way line, ran ten yards and passed to Olinyk, who made more Vikings ground before passing to Gunn, The Nipigon Park All-Stars) ronto Irish 16-0, Saturday, in an|who went over near the corner, Brack collided heavily with the|Minor Girls softball team cap-\exhibition rugger game at Lake-|then beat two defending backs St, Kitts catcher Brian Haynes.|tured the Group "B" title in the|view Park.
