RAMSEY The book of Judges is a bridge between the great period of conquest under Joshua and the beginnings of the monarchy under Saul. It is filled with references to Israel's frequent defeats and * humiliations, as well as the vic- tories available to Israel when God - appointed leaders were trusted and followed. It con- tains much valuable historic detail though reports are frag- mentary and many important episodes receive only brief treatment. The first chapter of Judges was evidently an attempt to furnish a transition between the book of Joshua and subse- quent events, for it includes a summary of conquests in the Jand of Canaan which had al- ready been related in Joshua. In the second chapter we find a divine messenger, the Angel of Jehovah, rebuking the Is- raelites for failure to destroy the lascivious, sensual, idola- trizing inhabitants of the Prom- ised Land. These nations must be destroyed if Israel is to be preserved. Instead, Israel be- comes like them, God's wrath and punishment. CYCLE REPEATED Again the children of Israel ery unto the Lord'and He raises up a deliverer, or judge, that| the holiness of His people might) prevail. Thus the cycle of Is- 'rael's history is repeated again in the pattern of rebellion, retri- bution, repentance and restora- tion. The first judge was oon "who deliy Israel from 4) LS reer hg invasion; the, second Ehud, who delivered) _ them from the Moabites. Of the third judge, Shamgar, we find no specific nation from which he delivered Israel. | The fourth was the dual judg- ship. of Deborah, the prophetess and Barak, the soldier. Inspired by her fervor, Barak leads Is- yael's army against the Canaan- ftes. Deborah prophecies the provoking) Judges These events, related in un- adorned prose in Chapter 4, be- come the brilliant victory song, The Song of Deborah and Barak in Chapter 5. There is no other poem in Hewbrew literature which displays such uncon- scious literary art, such in- tense patriotic and _ religious passion. It is both a paean in praise of the God of Israel and a superb account of a mighty contest in which not only kings fought but the stars of heaven and a river in its divinely swol- len course. The tale of Gideon, the fifth judge, is exciting and melodra- matic. He is the youngest son of a poor farmer, called by God to deliver his people from the Midianites whose predatory raids were keeping Israel in bondage, poverty and shame. He has misgivings about his abilities as a soldier, but when the Lord promises him aid and reassures him with three mir- aculous signs, Gideon agrees to undertake the mission. DESTROYS ALTAR He begins his work for the Lord by destroying his father's altar to Baal and the grove be-| side it, erecting an altar to God lin its place. Then he prepares to wage war on the Midianites. | Thirty-two thousand warriors | lrally to Gideon's standard and the Lord evolves 'two tests) which reduce them to 300 men.) Under his judgeship, Israel enjoyed 40 years of peace, yet at the time of his death, the tragic conditions which had pre- vailed at the time of Gideon's! calling returned again to} plague Israel. ; | Golden Text: 'There hath no! temptation taken you but. such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it."
