Miners Quit Sit-In At Pit COVENTRY, England (Reut- ers) -- Two coal miners unex- pectedly returned to the surface Friday after an 11-day "sit-in" in a mine in protest against working conditions and pay. ment by the state - board Thursday night which said the board refused to make any concessions to the two men and was prepared to let them remain underground indefin- itely. The statement said the mine was working normally and the board would not jeopardize the aituation simply because of the actions of two men. Gershon Jones, 43, and Jim Pearce, 34, were tired when they refused to leave the mine last week. They: threatened to stay down until the board set- tled a claim for bonus pay- ments and inspected working conditions at the mine. Despite their lack of rest-- sleeping is prohibited by law in English mines--they looked well on arrival at the surface and went to their homes after a check-up at a local medical Lien Verdict On Banks' Tax In Quebec QUEBEC (CP) -- The pro- vincial revenue department an- nounced Friday that Superior Court in Montreal has rendered a@ judgment in lien against the property of Harold Chambe- jain Banks, former president of the Seafarers' International Un- fon of Canada (Ind.) The judgment concerns a claim by the department for tax arrears of $1,475.58. The lien is against property owned by Banks in Pointe Claire, in suburban Montreal. This week, a Montreal bail- iff got a court order to seize moveable property from Banks's home in Pointe Claire in advance of judgment in a damage action by a former SIU official against Banks. Banks disappeared from his home two months ago when a bailiff tried to serve a warrant on him for his arrest to serve 30 days for contempt of court for ignoring an injunction which prohibited the SIU from picket- ing a vessel of Upper Lakes Shipping Limited in Trois - Ri- vieres. Banks also failed to make a later court appearance in Mont- real on a charge that he and other SIU executives conspired to have seamen abandon their ships to stage a protest march on Parliament Hill in Ottawa a year ago.
