14 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, August 19, 1964 North-East Tykes SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' Cop First Game » North-East bounced South- West 16-4 in the first game of 2-out-of-3 semi-final series of the Legion Tyke League Playoffs at Eastview Park Monday night. Paul Jubb pitched a fine game for the winners allowing only two hits and striking' ou' 13 THE GM GOLD CUP tournament, Oshawa's lawn bowling highlight of the season and for that matter, regarded as one of the outstanding men's rinks tournaments in Canada, is on today. They've been holding this outstanding classic for years and it's a rarity when the weattier isn't ideal. We can recall, over the past 20 years or more, only once that the event was entirely washed out-and only about two other occasions when it had to be curtailed to a two-game affair, due to a rain late in the day, or mid-way in the play. They've got 80 rinks entered in the competition, with 32 starting here at the local greens at nine o'clock this morning and eight at Whitby. The other half of the entries will swing into' action at 11:00 a.m. All rinks will play three games, so it makes for a stern com- petition, with a generous mixture of skill and good fortune necessary to attain the top rung -- The General Motors Gold Cup. Top three-game winner in "the other draw" claims The Oshawa Lawn Bowling Club Trophy and runner-up prizes. For years, the glamor of this event has been enhanced by the array of prizes -- they have 17 or 18 complete sets of prizes, and thanks to the generosity of the various sponsors, the value of the prizes runs about $1,500. In any sport circle, this would be regarded as terrific ! OSHAWA MERCHANTS won their Eastern Ontario Senior Baseball League playoff game against Belleville, last night, by default. It was to have been played in Little Britain but apparently Belleville had little intention of being on hand -- they couldn't field a team. They called at "supper-time" hoping it was raining too hard to allow play -- but this was not the case so then they admitted they were defaulting. We would like to suggest that this isn't doing much in the way of creating a good image for the Ontario Baseball Association. The OBA president is Jack Carson, of Belleville. It doesn't look too good when a Senior team, located in the home city of the OBA president, can not show up for a playoff game in their own Eastern Ontario League. Across the country, basebal! (now referred to as "hardball") is actually flourish- | ing and enjoying progress, but only in two major groups -- in the various minor or age-limit ranks and in the smaller towns and village-size communities, At the Senior and even Intermediate level, baseball has been losing ground for years. It begins to look as if "the big boys" -- and especially in "the big cities" -- are not interested in baseball any more, or at least not nearly as much as a few years ago. DIAMOND DUST: -- Cormaught Park 'Tigers' nosed out Storie Park 6-5 last night, to even up their Midget Soft- ball League OASA series. Winners of this game will represent Oshawa in OASA playdowns, with the first game against Pickering this Sat- urday while the losers will par- ticipate in the Midget League round-robin playoff scheule.
