@A THE OSHAWA TIMES, Fridey, July 31, 1964 | For Sunday Guests It's so easy to make an ice eream rose. Fill 8-0z. goblets with hard vanilla ice cream and a few spoonfuls of melba gauce for color. Pack 2" of the ice cream above the gob- lets. Freeze very hard. An hour before serving, dip a sharp knife into hot-hot water, and carve or cut the top into 'A PETALLED PARFAIT half-blown rose petals. (Dip the knife in not water often.) Leave the centre portion al- most whole. Dust the top- centre rather heavily with rosy-red sugar: shade it to light pink at the petal edges. Then into the freezer, a quick re-freezing, et voila you have an ic cream Roman rose. Woning Out Problems Of Pressing The Wash _ At first glance, a box of salt, wax paper and a card file have little to do with ironing. But they do have a connection, as we discovered on viewing a re- cent short film with new and pertinent ironing hints. Most women rate ironing and pressing high on the list. of dis- liked, even detested household chores. While there's no way to eliminate ironing entirely, there are a few things that can be done to make the job easier. To begin with, it's well worth- while to have an adjustable iron- ing board, so you can sit down to iron if you wish. If you'd rather stand, it is important to adjust the board to the right height to make ironing less fa- tiguing. The board should be well pad- ded with a cover chemically dreated to resist scorching or burning. It should fit tightly to avoid wrinkling and should be sponged off with cold water every third or fourth time it is used. GREATLY IMPROVED Today's irons are greatly im- proved over those made W years ago. They are lighter, faster to use and the heat is dis- tributed more evenly. While the body of the iron is made of stainless steel, the sole plate is aluminum and can be scratched. Because of this, a press cloth should always be used to avoid contact with me-' tallic items such as buckles, but- tons, snaps or zippers. This cannot be overemphasized. _ When the iron is not being used, place it upright on the jheel end. It is important to turn the dial to the "off" position and pull the plug before the iron is left unattended, Even for a mo- ment. Hands must be dry and the plug itself gripped and pulled, never just yank the cord If any kind of deposit pot as starch collects on the sole plate, it can be removed simply by sliding it over salt while the iron is hot. To make the plate smooth, run it over waxed paper then remove the excess way by iron- ing over a cloth. Modern irons have settings for al] fibres, natural and man- made. If the wrong setting is used, the. fabric can be dam- aged. Many times this damage is not visible to the naked eye, but a too-hot iron will eventually change the surface texture of both natural and synthetic fi- bres. Even before the fabric shows visible damage, sewing threads may' disintegrate and the seams pull apart. INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN Manufacturers' ins t ructions | on the care of fabrics are pro- vided with just about every garment purchased. Maintaining a card file of these instructions will insure proper care. Mark each tag with a brief descrip- tion of the garment. For biended fibres, set the dial for the fibre that requires the lowest temperature setting. If the iron does not have a dial, press all synthetics with a warn, not hot, iron. If the fibre in a garment is not identified, test the iron on some hidden spot, such as the seam on the inside of the hem. Press on the wrong side. In fact, every garment should be pressed on the wrong side to avoid shiiic. If pressed on the outside, use a press cloth, such as cheese- cloth. If a damp cloth is needed --for use with a dry iron-- wring it as dry as possible. It should be damp, not wet.
