Absence Of Steen Hurts Canada In '64 Tokyo 'Games By JACK SULLIVAN Canadian Press Sports Editor "This is shattering news," said Ken Twigg this week when Dave Steen, Canada's champion shot-putter, announced he had given up competition for a year. The young giant from Burnaby, B.C., has been hit by mononu- Cleosis, a blood disease. "There goes a possible medal hope at the Tokyo Olympics: in October right down the drain," said Twigg, who managed Can- ada's team to the 1962 British Empire Games at Perth, Aus- tralia. Steen won a third-place bronze medal in his specialty. "It is by no. means an exag- geration to say that Steen was within reach of a medal and certainly within reach of finish- ing in the first six at Tokyo," Twigg added. "This is a definite blow to Canada's hopes. We _ haven't many possible medal winners in track and field and he showed ws at Perth that he had the abil- ity to improve and to be ranked right up there with the world." CLOSE TO 62 FEET Steen is six feet four inches tall, weighs 216 pounds and is only 22 years old. "He has come awful close, within about one-half inch, of hitting 62 feet and, apart from the Americans, there are only a few Europeans reaching that far," Twigg added. Another track official, Paul 'oce of Toronto, who coaches Abigail Hoffman and Jenny close to world ranking in field events and that is a situation that is a crime." Poce was critical of the Ama- teur Athletic Union, which gov- erns track and field in this country, and the Canadian Olympic Association. NEED COMPETITION "The AAU is working in the wrong direction. It is concerned mainly with administration and paper work and doesn't seem to concern itself with training and competition of our young ath- letes. "We have the talent. We have athletes who are interested in track and field across the coun- try, but they haven't the leader- ship. The leading country in the world in track and field is the United States, just south of our border, and we have only three or four athletes competing in their open championships. "We should be. competing in \the U.S. in depth, but it is a |matter of money, and that's |where the Olympic people are letting our athletes down. All they are doing is raising money to get teams to Olympic Games. Part of this money could bé used to send athletes to the U.S. and Europe in the off-Olympic years to give them that badly needed international competi- tion." Poce, who just returned from England where his two athletes competed, said competition there was '"'fantastic."' "There's lots of it and in) depth and our Canadians are) going to see it in Tokyo in Oc-| tober not only from British ath-} letes but from those right across Europe and from the U.S." Wingerson, .two Olympic hope- fuls, expressed the same senti- ment. "Steen's loss is a shocker." "Now," haven't said Poce, "wel anybody in Canada GREENWOOD RACEWAY Start good, won driving Also Ran in Order: Senida, Mistie Way, Lady Alice, Queen's Idy!l, Kawartha Babe and Queen, Saunders.
