Now there is a yellowish, crusty |discoloration all around the out- er edge of the base of the toilet, causing a staining into the rub- ber tile that seems to be harder to remove with each scrubbing. What can be done to correct this? ANSWER: I recommend hav- ing plumber who replaced toilet bow] check installation; joint between bowl and outlet may be faulty, or may have developed a leak. RUSTED IRON RAILING | QUESTION: We bought middle-aged house last summer and have been refinishing the inside Where necessary. Now we want to tackle the outside ap- pearance. here is an iron rail- ing on the sides of the front steps and at the edge of the open porch. The iron is rusted. What kind of finish or paint can we use on the railing? How do we handle the rust on the metal? ANSWER: All loose and flak- ing rust should be removed with fine steel wool and turpentine, dampproof fed primer contain- ing fish oil, applied according to label instructions. Use a fin- ish paint in the desired 'color made by the same manufac- turer. SHOE POLISH STAIN QUESTION: I have a light tan plastic chair that has a spot of brown shoe polish on it. How can I remove the stain? ANSWER: Rub the spot light- ly with a nonflammable. liquid spot remover. CLEANING PINE PANELING QUESTION: We just bought a 20-year-old house which has pine paneling in three rooms. There are darker areas around radia- tors, doors, windows. This is excellent for removing grease and grime, etc... and leaves a protecting film on the surface to prevent dirt penetration into the wood. To lighten the color of the paneling, any finish will have OLD WHITEWASH MIX QUESTION: How do you mix whitewash? My house is old, but well built, with a sandstone foundation. I have called build- ers' supplies, but they tell me no one uses whitewash any more and they know nothing as to how it is mixed. 1 remember my grandfather mixing salt and bluing with lime, but I do not know the proportions. Want to whitewash the basement, as the stone. being rough and porous would take too much paint, ANSWER: Don't know any whitewash formula containing bluing. The simples whitewash is 'hydrated lime (slaked, pow- household ammonia to the solu- tion will help loosen the grease. GLUE SPOTS ON GLASS QUESTION: My daughter did some craft wotk. on our glass top dining table and neglected to remove some spattered glue. How can the hardened glue be removed without damage to the glass? ANSWER: If this was an all- purpose glue, it can be soften- ed with nail polish remover, be- ing careful to keep the remov- er from contact with any paint- led surface. If an animal glue was uséd, moisture will soften it; use damp cloth. RADIATOR VALVES QUESTION: We have had trouble this year, with the air- vent valves on three bedroom radiators: water accumulates every day. What do you recom- mend? ANSWER: - Tilted radiators frequently cause this condition. All radiators should stand per- fectly level;. small blocks of wood can be used to prop up lowered sides due to house set- tlement; etc. Water will also accumulate in a vent if the shut- off valve is kept partly open; always keep it either wide open or tightly shut. The affected vent valves may be defective. Remove the valve from 4 trouble-free 'radiator and try on the radiator giving trouble. If the radiator then functions properly, a new valve is neces- sary. YELLOWED TILE CEMENT QUESTION: We have white pearl plastic tile in our bath- room, The cement has become yellow. Is there anything I can use that would whiten this and yet not harm the tile? ANSWER: Apply household bleach solution, using a very small, pointed brush to yellow- ed cement; then rinse off thor- joughly with plenty of clean water. PIANO KEYS CARE ' , QUESTION: We __ recently acquired a second-hand upright }How can this discoloration be removed? We have a cover over the unit, but it doesn't seem to help much. ANSWER: Try placing a sheet of soft foam plastic or rubber foam over the top of the unit to ldeaden the sound of rain. To prevent water accumulation; form the material slightly tent- shaped. GREASE-COATED BURNERS QUESTION: I have obtained an old gas stove on which the burners and tops are coated with charred grease which I haven't been able to soak or scrub clean. Is there any solu- tion I can soak them in for an hour or so that will loosen this burnt grease without harm- ing the burners? ANSWER: Place burners in pan of hot water and washing soda, using about cupful to pan of water; keep pan hot over hardwood stores.
