RENEWING CEDAR ODOR QUESTION: There is a cedar closet in the fairly old house we recently moved into. However, the cedar odor has evaporated into the wood. Is there any way to renew the odor? ANSWER: Yes. The walls can be treated with a spray prepar- ation which imparts cedar odor; this is available at some paint and hardware and housewares stores and is very effective. An other way is to sand down the entire inner surface of the cedar closet, exposing a new layer of aromatic wood. A port- able electric sander is a good énergy-and-time saver for this. ff the closet is quite old, it may be necessary to use a plane to teach still-aromatic cedar wood. DISCOLORED LINOLEUM QUESTION: I have a type of {noleum flooring on the bath- toom floor: white with black be eliminated? ANSWER: The rusty water may be due to sediment in the tank or in the water heater. Sediment should be drawn off from the water tank at least once a month. If this doesn't clear the water, try flushing out the heater. Or the water may be being overheated; if there is no automatic temperature regu- lator, one should be installed. If the tank is an old galvanized one, it may be heavily corroded inside; cleaning the tank is usually not worth the cost; re- placement is the most practical remedy, Frequently, having a magnesium rod installed by a Buying or Selling! S., OSHAWA PHONE 723-1121 QUESTION: How does one re- finish the top of a table marred by plants? It has a walnut veneer finish. ANSWER: First try polishing the marred spots with very fine- ly powdered rottenstone or other mild abrasive and a drop of light machine oil, using the fingertip and following the grain of the wood; a drop of cam- phorated oil or turpentine may be used. If none of these is suc- cessful, marring is probably so deep that complete refinishing is required, Remove the finish down to bare wood (paint re- mover for varnish, denatured alcohol for shellac); then touch up lighter areas with matching wood stain or bleach darkened spots with commercial wood bleach. When wood surface is thoroughly dry, sand smooth and wipe off all dust; apply any desired finish. SPOT ON WALLPAPER QUESTION: My home has a large spot on wallpaper caused by an ice dam leak.
