Championship, at Montreal, Dairy Queen, at Harman and SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' THE 1964 ALL-STAR classic is now history, but as such, it will still be remembered for quite a while, since as a spectacle, it came up to almost everything that is expected in such a pre-arranged diamond battle, namely a little of everything that the dyed-in-the-wool baseball fan loves and always wants to see. There was some brilliant pitching, some scintillating fielding plays, the odd touch of "inside baseball'"' and best of all, some honest-to-goodness_ hitting, including home-run blows -- and then the grand story-book climax, Johnny Callison's homer, on the first pitch, with the score tied and two men out, in the 9th inning -- that was the decoration on a cake that had already been topped with icing. There was only one error in the piece and it was disastrous, as Joe Pepitone's hurried throw to Histon How- ard, following Orlando Cepeda's hit into short right-field, took a crazy hop past Howard and Willie Mays slid across the plate with the tying run. Willie had provided the spark when he walked after a 3-and-2 count, then stole second base, 'just. prior to Cepeda's hit -- his first in 20 appearances at the plate in All-Star competition, Dick Radatz, in his relief role, looked as if he was going to save the victory for the American League, especially when he fanned pinch-hitter Hank Aaron for the second out -- but Callison poled the very first pitch out of the park. Manager Walt Alston had picked Callison at the last minute -- and he says -- because Callison had '"'killed" his Dodgers a couple of times already this year. Yesterday Callison gave Alston a bonus and more than 50,000 fans in Shea Stadium, the thrill of a great victory finish. x x x x SHORT SPORTS: -- Johnny Callison was voted the win- ner of the Arch Ward Trophy, as the All-Star game's most valuable player, by the scribes and broadcasters. . . .COULD NOT HELP but wonder yesterday afternoon if Governor Wal- lace of Alabama was able to enjoy the All-Star game... . HAL BUTLER, Oshawa Golf Club pro and both Harry Mc- Ilree and Wilson Patterson of Whitby (Ashburn) Club, are en- tered in the Ontario pro golfers' tournament, that opens to- day at Toronto's Bayview Country Club. They have a total of 104 entries. . . . NATIONAL LEAGUE teams are not all "resting" today, Phillies are at home to Cardinals tonight while the Giants visit the Cubs for a doubleheader and Cin- 'cinnati is at Pittsburgh... . AMERICAN LEAGUE interest is 'growing keener, Orioles continue to hold their lead over White Sox and Yankees, while Herman Killebrew and the slugging Twins are in fourth place. White Sox have lost all 10 games with the Yankees. If they had won only four of them, they'd be in first place. This next four weeks could . have a big bearing on the pennant races in both leagues and ' the action should be lively. WOODBINE RACE RESULTS Copyright 1964 by McMurray Publishing Co., Ltd.
