NI cag ter OS ERNE IO ASP AS RNB Re ripe ye os oy gang eV" Ss eee ee pus Phe ett onarage THE OSHAWA TIMES, Friday, July 3, 1964 Willie Smith's Bat Spahn'ss Magic Touch Apparently Used Up | Blasts Baltimore A | Angels Snap Slump By MURRAY CHASS Press Sports Writer Willie Smith, baseball's new- est Cinderella, hasn't turned into a pumpkin after all. Smith, who stepped off the pitchers mound into a slugging outfielder's role, clouted a grand-slam homer in the ninth inning that boosted Los Angeles Angels to a 10-6 triumph over the American League - leading Baltimore Orioles Thursday night. Smith aso belted a single and two doubles and drove in two other runs as the Angels broke their five-game losing streak. The 25-year-old wizard, who didn't do much for the Angels three consecutive games with his bat during the team's recent 11-game winning streak. Then Smith tailed off consid. erably, as if midnight had struck. Before-Thursday's game he had only five hits in 27 times at bat, sudden slump dropped his average from a sea- son's high of .340 to .286. Just as suddenly, though, Willie re- discovered his glass slipper. He popped out in the first inning, then: Doubled home the Angels' first run in the fourth; ignited a two-run rally with a leadoff sin- gle in the sixth; doubled across another run in the seventh and connected off ace reliever Stu Miller with the bases loaded in the ninth for his. fourth home run, His hit and RBI production was his biggest for one game and increased his average to .317 and his RBI total to 23, 21 coming in the last 17 games. YANKS EDGE ATHLETICS Elsewhere in the American League, New York Yankees nipped Kansas City Athletics 4-3 in 15 innings, Minnesota Twins outslugged Boston Red Sox 15-9 and Detroit Tigers mauled Cleveland Indians 9-1. The Orioles' loss cut their lead| to three games over the Yank- kees. Jack Brandt hit a pair of two-out, two-run homers, the second coming in the eighth _ with his pitching. arm, won SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' THE FOLK FESTIVAL track meet here on Dominion Day was a treat for the track enthusiasts. Alex Oakley won the beautiful trophy donated by Col. R. S. McLaughlin, so at least for the first year, this handsome and coveted award will stay in Oshawa. Completing the 20-mile walk in less than three hours was a tribute to Oakley's splendid condition, as well as his skill and competitive spirit, for the hot, humid weather was not really 'first choice' for rigid athletic endeavor. The Toronto veteran and ex-policeman, Art Keay, as usual, finished what he started and, although he was "well back"-- he finished the race. Three of the entrants were forced to drop out. . The big upset, of course, was in the women's 80- metre hurdles, when world's title-holder Tammy Davis of U.S.A., could finish only third. Marion Snider of Toronto won it, followed within a fraction by Jenny Wingerson, also of Toronto. They set a new Canadian "native" record for this event and equalled the Canadian "open" mark of 11 seconds even. This, by the way, can be accepted as a tribute to the splendid cinder track this city is fortunate enough to have at Alexandra Park. It's considered one of the best in Canada and was "'built" away back in the early 30's. It doesn't get nearly as much use as it should and yet, even though given very little attention in the past 15 years, it is still in excellent condition, The weatherman gave the officials a real break, too -- a heavy rainstorm actually circled Alexarsira Park in mid-afternoon. Reports of heavy rain were received from Pickering, Brooklin, Bowmanville and even in the south end of Oshawa -- but at Alexandra Park they had only a brief sprinkle. x ES x x OSHAWA MERCHANTS are at home to Brockville, in a | senior baseball game this evening, at Kinsmen Civic Memorial | | Stadium. For the ninth consecutive time Thursday Warren Spahn, Mil- waukee's 43-year-old pitching marvel, trudged from the mound early as the Braves lost to St. Louis 4-3. So, within hours, Milwaukee fans were forced to wonder whether the Braves were ready to hit the road and whether Spahn had reached the end of it. First came still another report that the Braves would be play- ing in Atlanta next year. And then Spahn. went out to the mound against the Cardinals, looking for his first victory in a month an? his first complete game since May 19. Instead, the winningest left- hander in major league history was knocked out in the seventh inning and tagged with his third straight loss. He now is bogged down with a 5-8 record and a staggering. 4.89 earned run av- erage.
