WHITMAN BATS BEHIND SHUTTERS QUESTION: How to keep bats from roosting behind the slated house shutters? We had redwood siding, natural finish, and white shutters. We have hosed the bats out, used bug Spray, even tried moth balls. They leave for a few days, but always come back. We are thinking of putting pieces of sponge rubber in the openings made by the siding, where they enter and leave. Would this do any damage to the wood? Any other suggestions? ANSWER: Rather than the sponge rubber (which might ab- sorb and retain moisture and Pass it along to adjacent wood), I suggest, if possible, putting on strips of wire mesh, through which bats can't fly. Some large garden supplies centres and housewares deal- ers stock a gelatinous prepara- tion (in aerosol can) to discour- age birds from roosting) this is also effective against bats. Does no harm, but is unpleasant- feeling to their feet. An applica- tion is effective for a season. DULLED VARNISH QUESTION: We have varnish- ed wood paneling in our base- ment family room that has be- come very dulled. How can the shine be restored. to.the wood surface without refinishing? ANSWER: Dulling of varnish is usually caused by the Presence of moisture and dust in the air. The shine can be re- stored by cleaning the - wood surface with a wax-base, liquid floor-cleaning preparation. Or wash down the walls with tur- pentine and then apply a thin coat of paste wax. Whichever treatment is used, when the wax on the wood is dry, it should be well rubbed with soft cloths. Is there any way) preferably powdered, can be' slides to treat the concrete to over. come the dust? ANSWER: Liquid cement hardening preparations are available at masonry supplies dealets; follow directions on the label carefully, Or painting the floor with a rubber base floor paint will overcome the dust. Waxing the concrete will also help prevent dusting, ROUGH PORCELAIN QUESTION: The bottoms of my porcelain bathtub and sink are rough, dull and hard to clean. Is there any way I can refinish this? ANSWER: An epoxy tub and tile finish, in a variety of col- ors, is now available at some housewares, paint and hardware dealers. Gable: louvers should have a total open area of one square inch for each 300 square Inches of attic area, so yours just about makes it (a little on the skimpy side). Louvers should be kept open all year round, however, on very. windy days, keeping them closed for a short spell does no harm. Of course, this assumes you have closures or hinged louvers, which most houses don't have. CRACKED FLOOR BOARDS QUESTION: This was ou: first winter in our recently fin- ished home. Cracks developed between the boards of the hard- wood floors. Does. this mean the floors are faulty? How can the cracks be repaired? ANSWER: During the months of dry steam heat, boards will tend to shrink as moisture evapofates, particularly if the lumber used was not thorough- |ly seasoned. This is the best jtime for filling cracks. | Thoroughly clean out all dust jand dirt: a sturdy bit of wire will loosen any caked matter and a vacuum will draw it out and any dust also. If the cracks are not wide, the easiest repair is with a putty-like material, available in stick form in most popular wood colors, at plywood deal- ers and many hardware stores. Or fill thin oracks (less; than one-fourth inch) with pre-| pared crack filler (available at} hardware dealers), or with. a thick paste made of sawdust and glue or varnish; when dry and hard, sand smooth with rest of floor and stain to match color, then refinish, For larger | cracks, thin strips of wood can be inserted, using long, thin, finishing nails; 'stain to match and refinish. | CERAMIC TILE FLOOR | QUESTION: What substance, | | | added to white tile cement or grout purchased at hardware stores to achieve the gray grout used in laying ceramic tile floors? The other dries so very white, it makes a floor patch- job very noticeable. ANSWER: A tiny touch of lamp black, well stirred into the grout, is all you need. If the 'first little, bit isn't enough, repeat the process, adding a little bit at a time. The big risk is in putting in too much; it is always easy to make grout (or paint) darker, but al- most impossible to make it lighter if it has once been made foo dark. This is one operation where patience is really a vir. tue. MATCHSTICK DRAPES QUESION: For color, so the rooms won't look so bare, we use matchstick drapes during the warmer weather. How can they be painted? The ones we have have been giving service for several years and are faded looking, although in good condi- tion otherwise. ANSWER: The easiest meth- od is to spray these drapes with good quality enamel in aerosol form. Be sure to protect the area behind the drapes and the surrounding surfaces with a heavy wrapping paper or pilas- ter sheeting. Joe Bananas Ordered To Perjury Trial MONTREAL (CP) -- Joseph |Bonanno was ordered Friday to stand trial on one perjury charge and is undergoing vol- untary statement on another. Judge Marcel Gaboury re- jected a defence motion and or- dered the dapper, 59-year-old accused, described by the Crown as one of the top United States underworld leaders, to trial Monday on a charge of ly- ing when he said he had no criminal record, The other case, in which the Crown said Bonanno lied in his motion of habeas corpus aimed at preventing his deportation, is scheduled to resume Monday. Bonanno came to Canada in May and applied for status as a landed immigrant May 25, saying he had bought into a cheese factory. He was ordered deported May 27 at an immigration depart- ment hearing on the grounds a 1941 United States minimum wage law violation constituted a criminal offence. He was charged with perjury the same day for saying he had no crim- inal record. roe "Banks were lam NET EARNINGS Banks were langely ignored by investors and prices eased as there was a lack of bids.
