4 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, June 17, 1764 _ ANEW TWIST Soccer Referee Quits In Protest Of Thursday night, Napco played against Ukrainia-2 in the Sec- ond Division of the Oshawa Senior Soccer League. It was a very much one-sided game with Ukrainia all the time on the offensive. Jerry Kosiw in the Ukrainia goal did not have much to do, and managed to keep every shot out of his goa', John Baran (2), Jerry Kuzemchak (1), and Bill Kys- mutch (1) were the scorers of Ukrainia, to make the count at 4-0 in their favor. REFEREE WALKS OUT Ukrainia and Hungaria were scheduled to play a regular Senior competition game, but after a half-hour heated discus- sion, they played an exhibition game, the competition game to be played some other time. It appeared that the referee did not want to let the game start, until a certain player was removed from the field. The executive was of the opin- jon that the grudge was with- out ground and ordered th referee to start the game. H: was of a different opinion, however, and left the Stadium The unsportsmanlike conduct « the referee and the player in volved vill be dealt with by th Discipline Committee. After it was decided that the, two teams would play an exh bition game, some fans left th Stadium, because this game dic not have any attraction for them. To a small extent this is true, but a soccer game is a soccer game and it is also true that} the teams did everything to win/ the game, if only to keep up) their dignity. Both boys fanned five batters in their stints. Davy Smith, Larry Buckley, '|Ted McComb, Frank McCabe 'jand Walter Klamin all played 'lwell for the win. Taylor and : |Reid formed the losing battery. In the game at Alexandra Doug Webster combined their talent for a shutout win but fine fielding, including three double-plays, was the support he needed for the win. Mark Blanchard drove in two runs and contributed a brilliant run- ning catch in the defensive play. Alex Maibdroda deserved a better fate, since he struck out 11 batters to Rose's nine but his stpport was shaky and the winners had four unearned runs. A north wind, 10-20 mph, gusted and shifted its way around to the south and back again before the day was over, to give the sailors a real- skill test and the tricky winds creat- ed tight competition, with the calibre improving. In the first event, Lawrence and Hercia both caught Kirby on a port tack, forcing him to Park with Doug Mitchell fan. ning 10 and having a no-hitter while losing pitcher Wilson had ast yield "ground". The leeward mark of the first lap proved to be a sticker for Kirby as- he disqualified himself, attempting to establish an overlap and ran down the marker. Lawrence took the lead but lost ground on a wind shift, which allowed Hercia to come in first, by a boat-length, after a cat-and-mouse duel for position. Hercia took the lead in the second 'race but lost it after the first lap. when a wing shift made him "do a dance," try- ing to find it again. Kirby took over, with Lawrence trailing and Hercia in third. The leeway mark proved interesting again, as Hercia failed to give way to Wilder on starboard tack at upheld and qualified, Jim Pascoe turned out to be the dark horse of the Series, which is to be completed this next weekend. Pascoe has a g0od grip on third spot, with a fine chance of moving into sec- ond place.
