Wilfred Pelletier of Toronto, executive director of the Na- tional Indian Council of Canada, told delegates to a white-Indian workshop at Kenora, Ont., Fri- day that Indian pupils at the school eat lunch in a separate classroom. He said Indians play together apart from whites and that In- dian pupils, who are behind academically, are placed in separate classes. He named the school as St. Anne's Separate School. Stan Carroll, secretary of the separate school board, Satur- day denied the charges and said the 48 Indian children at the school were taken in at the re- quest of the Indian affairs branch. He said the children were without a teacher at the mission schools, so the board volunteered school facilities at St. Anne's, closest school to the mission. Mr. Carroll said discipline is lacking in some of the children, both white and Indian, and a special group, both Indian and white, is supervised during the lunch period. 8 Some of the Indian young- sters were found to be behind in their grades, Mr. Carroll said, s0 a special class was formed. However, this class also in- cluded white children, and was not an attempt at segregation. NDP Leader Urges Youth In Politics NORTH BAY (CP) -- T. C. Douglas, national leader of the New Democratic Party, urged voters Saturday to send younger men to the Commons in order to get the government moving. "It is too serious a time to take the old attitude of voting the way your father and mother voted," he told a rally on be- half of Rev. H. E. Mackay of|. Mattawa, NDP candidate in the June 22 federal byelection in Nipissing. Mr. Douglas said that in 30 years in politics he had never seen the country in such a state of confusion and bewilder- ment. He said Canada faces problems of poverty, unemploy- ment, education and a proper medical care plan and all the government does is fight over a flag. Mr. Mackay told the audi- ence, estimated at 400 by party officials, that a vote for NDP would prevent another general election. "A Liberal vote will give Pearson the new confidence he wants to call a general election and a Diefenbaker vote will re- sult in a similar move," he said. Before. the rally Saturday night Mr. Douglas showed a group of supporters the flag which he favors:-He said the flag, featuring a single red leaf on a white background flanked by two blue bars, would be a symbol of unity. During a luncheon meeting Saturday NDP member of Par- liament from Timiskaming, Ar- nold Peters, ejected a man who was heckling Mr. Douglas.
