Such a move was quickly denied by Turkish- Cypriot Vice-President Dr. Fa- zil Kuchuk. "I hope they are all rumors and that there is nothing to them," Makarios said in a brife interview amid a round of con- ferences and meetings to dis- cuss weekend developments in the Cyprus situation. The Cyprus government called in three top UN repre- power to continue large-scale escorting. "Instead of escorts, the UN is increasing its patrols on roads and its observers at check- points, particularly when it is known that a convoy is com- ing," the spokesman said. UN forces have escorted Turkish convoys of food and other supplies from the port of Famagusta to Nicosia and crops from the countryside to market and to Famagusta for export. Turkish employees at British bases and other installations sentatives Sunday and asked them what the UN peace force would do if Turkey invaded Cyprus. He said he feels the current threats of a Turkish landing on the troubled Mediterranean is- land to protect the Turkish mi- nority of 90,000 people is not as serious as earlier ones. | Asked whether he regarded the possibility of direct Turkish intervention now as being. more serious than in February, he re- plied: "In February, it was more serious, in my view." As to the action the Cypriot government is taking to meet new threats, he said only that "we are taking certain. meas- ures and in general making cer- tain preparations." Makarios said he hoped that if a meeting between President Johnson and Turkish Premier Ismet _Inonu in Washington ma- terializes, it 'will be construc- tive." Meanwhile, the UN peace force has sharply reduced its escorting of Turkish - Cypriots through Greek-Cypriot areas. The Turks immediately pro- tested that the results of the cut "fis bound to be very serious." LACKS MANPOWER A spokesman for the UN said also have been escorted. Mayor Tries To Settle Stage Strike NEW YORK (AP)--A tenta- tive agreement that could end the Broadway theatre strike was announced"today by Mayor Robert F. Wagner. He said negotiators for Act- ors Equity Association and the League of New York Theatres agreed at 3 a.m., but their ac- tion is subject to a vote by the governing bodies of both groups today. The terms won't be disclosed until presented to the govern- ing bodies, Wagner said. The negotiators said they were con- fident of acceptance. The strike called Saturday midnight, has closed only two performances -- Sunday mati- nees of Oliyer! and The Deputy. Customers got refunds or tick- ets for later dates.
