Note the entrance from the carport which gives direct access to all areas of the house. Kitchen has pullman breakfast corner with pedes- tal table, and range are prac- tical items. High placement of awning type wi s in bed- rooms allows for easy furni- ture arrangement. House could be built on a 50-foot lot but a larger one is recom- mended, Construction is brick . veneer with stone facing, but instructions are included how to build in solid brick or frame if so desired. WHITMAN MUSTY ODOR FROM SPACE QUESTION: We have a ranch type house without a basement; there is a crawl space, un- cemented, under the house. Al- though we get no dampness in the' house, we do get a musty odor in certain spots, only a little in the months we have no heat in the house. We would like to correct this without a lot of expense. Could we use aluminum foil on the under side of the floor? Would this take care of the condition? ANSWER: Yes; aluminum foil applied to the underside of the floor will prevent the rise of dampness from the craw! space. To make the repair com- plete, staple blanket insulation over foil to keep floor warm. Sprinkle liberal amounts of calcium chioride around on the crawl space floor to help absorb the musty odor. Adequate air circulation and _ ventilation should be provided in the craw! space; windows or louvers kept open all year round on clear dry days. Or a cloth dipped in kero- sene (being very careful of fire hazard), being sure windows are open. CANVAS FOR PORCH FLOOR QUESTION: An open porch over a kitchen has been covered with duck canvas in the past to keep out rain. Is there any new material that you can recom- mend? So many new and im- proved ways of doing things nowadays that perhaps there is a better method than the old canvas way. ANSWER: While there are some durable materials for porch floors,' there is still nothing the matter whatsoever with a good tight covering of the gold old canvas you now have. PAINTING IRON BEDSTEAD QUESTION: I have an old iron bedstead from which I have removed the paint. I want to repaint it black. What, if any- thing, should I put on before) I repaint it? ANSWER: Be sure the iron surface is absolutely clean and free of any trace of grime, etc. Roughen with steel wool, then apply an enamel undecoater and finish with gloss or semi- gloss enamel. STICKY PAINT FINISH QUESTION: I used an oil base enamel to refinish an end table. After two weeks, the paint presume) varnished or anyway has a glossy finish? It is hard to keep it looking nice, and espe- cially to protect it against hot dishes. ANSWER: Urethane finishes are designed for application on bare wood. Old finishes must be removed, then the wood sanded and buffed with fine steel wool for a smooth surface; all dust must be wiped off and the wood surface must be absolutely clean and dry before applying the ure- thane finish. If the previous fin- ish is urethane that has cured for at least two days, just sand the surface thoroughly with .No. 6- sandpaper and wipe off all dust before recoating. The ure- vhane coating ts applied as it comes in the can, following manufactuer's label directions very carefully. For an easy heat-resistant fin- ish, I suggest using a varnish made with synthetic resin; this type of finish will not develop white spots. Dull the present gloss with a flatting liquid, (widely available at. paint finish still feels sticky and hasn't hardened completely. What do you recommend?
