Lauded The publishing world still con- tinues to produce books on the late John Fitzgerald Kennedy, one of which is a nostalgic fam- ily album, "THE JOHN F. KENNEDYS -- A FAMILY ALBUM" (Ambassador Books Ltd.) by Mark Shaw. Shaw, a contributing photog- rapher for Life Magazine and a director of television films, had a gréat advantage in taking these pictures over a period of months -- he was regarded as more of a friend of the family, an\expert photographr, rather than an "'official" photographer. The publishers signed a con- tract early in November, 1963 with Shaw for a book containing his intimate photographs of President Kennedy, his wife and children. Shaw started taking photographs of the family in 1950, when he travelled with them for several months on and between campaign trips. The pictures were taken in George- town, Washington, Hyannis Port and elsewhere, over a period of four years. The Kennedy family at all times appeared to be unaware that Shaw was around in these warm, informal pictures. There is a picture of Jacqueline in a pony-<drawn carriage crowded with children; of Jacqueline swinging Caroline in knee-deep water at the ocean; of the late president tossing Caroline in the} air. The pictures. speak for them- selves; therefore, they don't have captions, but at the end of the book Mr. Shaw has added a few brief notes describing the circumstances under which cer- tain pictures or series of pic- tures were taken. This book is more than a fam- ily album -- it is an historical document of great 'value, one which is to be cherished and re- tained as a collector's item, It is one of the finest books of its kind to appear in recent months IDENTIFYING BIRDS Do you have difficulty identi- fying birds? If so, a new book published may help. It's called "NAMING THE BIRDS AT A GLANCE" (Ran- dom House of Canada Ltd.) bv Lou Blachly and Randolph Jenks, with guide drawings b' Sheridan Oman. It represents a new system which teaches you how to identify any unfamiliar bird by using whatever you no- tice at first sight -- it is a guide to the eastern land birds from South Carolina west to the Rocky Mountains and north to the Arctic. This book -- a birti guide with ' out color -- is something new und@r the sun, for it provides a system of identification (thor oughly tested in a privately pub- lished earlier edition) which is |Martial Appeal Board.
