House Preservation Oshawa City Council now holds the answer to the fate of the 118-year-old Robinson house, the former sailors' tavern near the foot of Simcoe street. The city fathers Tuesday night decided to meet in com- mittee to discuss a brief from Mrs. Gordon D. Conant cail- ing for preservation of the old three-storey house along with two others at the lakefront. The brief was submitted on behalf of the Oshawa and Dis- trict Historical Society. Mrs. Conant is chairman of the So- ciety's preservation of historic buildings committee. DISPLAY SPACE Mrs. Conant has suggested that the tavern and the two cottages should be preserved because they are the oldest at the lake and they would pro- vide room in addition to Henry House to display antiques and pioneer utensils. The city bought the Robinson house to demolish it as a first step toward expanding lake- front park area. The motion is! still tabled, on council's agenda.! Midget S To Open COBOURG The Cobourg' Merchant midget baseball team will open the 1964 season at Whitby on Sunday. The first home game is slated for May 31. The midget club played an ex-) hibition game with the Peter- borough midget All-Stars Mon- day in Donegan Park, Cobourg. John Ryan, manager - coach of the Cobourg téam, expects to have as good a team this year as he did last year. Most of the. players have played under Ryan before, and very few are | Sears report gives us enough Architectural Conservancy of Ontario, examined the Robinson house recently. His report is in- cluded in the brief. (He says the house is prob- ably important because of its rarity (of type), that it has a basic, structural soundness and the limestone foundation walls and buff brick show no natural deterioration). POINTS CITED The brief makes these points on preserving the tavern: 1) an opportunity to broaden the scope of the ODHS; 2; oppor- tunity to increase harbor at- tractions such. as Lakeview Park and Henry House Mu- seum; 3) increased bus travel to the south end, with increased revenue; 4) extension of educar tional value to school children; "increase interest and knowl- edge in the part the lake and harbor played. in Oshawa's early days"; 5) attraction to encouragement . , . on its con-|those on ships using city harbor dition to warrant repairing andjand would serve to incfease making it into a public attrac-|the present small number of tion." ipleasure craft visiting the Osh- (Paul Sears, president of the'awa Yacht Club. chedule Sunday June 29, 7.30 p.m.; Whitby) at Cobourg, July 1, 2 P.m.;| One of Canada's most famous Orono at Oshawa, July 1, 2)Holstein herds which has won p.m.; Cobourg at Ajax, July 4,| top honors at the shows in both 2 pam. By preserving old buildings we "bring to minds of the present ang future generations a picture-story of the past and the life of Canada's pioneers." The ODHS "feels keenly the structure (Robinson House) should be preserved and used . added attraction in this section . ... and'as an adjunct to the already popular Henry House."' PARK LAND IMPORTANT Creation of more parkland is an important secondary consid- eration in the project, suggests the brief. Mrs. Conant has sug- gested centennial funds could be used for both obtaining and pre- serving the buildings, and in- creasing the park area by ac- quisition of the Jand east of Henry street to the harbor.
