Part of the early voting for the Ajax liquor plebiscite Saturday, a record number of voters turned out to make Ajax '"'wet." A total of 2,052 persons out of 3,938 eligible voters showed up to give the "wets" far more than the necessary 60 per cent of votes. Approximately 100 bal- lots were destroyed. The 2,052 voters represents 53 per cent of Ajax's eligible voters, an in- crease of five per cent over the turnout for the last municipal election. Mr. Newman was the first president of the Ontario County Producers' Association, when it was organized in May, 1946; he held this office for two years. He was also secre- tary-treasurer for five- years from 1959 to 1963. On several occasions he represented On- tario County at district and annual meetings of the parent aesociation. He wag active for several years with the North Ontario Federation of Agricul- ture. Entering municipal life in 1936, he served for 12 years; seven years as councillor, three years as deputy reeve, and two years as reeve. His tenure of office in municipal life covered the difficult war years, and the two years immediately follow- ing. He was president of Game- bridge Farm Forum from 1950 to 1955, and played an impor- tant part in setting up the Gamebridge Farm Forum Park.
