10 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Friday, April 24, 1964 - THE MASCULINE TONE for this library is established by the distinctive pecan wood- grain wall paneling and the massive furnishings. The pan- eling is a factory-finished hardboard which maintains its fine appearance simply by oc- -- wiping vith a damp cloth, Capture Garden Beauty On Film To make this gardening sea- son something special, try cap- turing the beauty of your flow- ers on film. Plant your favor. ite varieties, and when they begin to bloom, start "'shooting" the results. You'll find there's a special fun that goes with photographing your own '"'green thumb"? achievements. And it's amazing how pretty flowers look in pictures. Start with an easy-to-use cam- era and a good supply o% color film. And here are some remind- ers to help you in shooting the garden scene: See that your flowers look their Sunday best before you start clicking. Dried leaves and blossoms should be removed. If you're cutting away dead blossoms on roses or other flowers where there is a rela- tively large stem, cut away from the camera position. If the cut stem of a rose shows, it be- comes a distracting white dot in your picture. It's a good idea also, to clean up the ground around the flower to be photographed as much as possible, and to break up any large lumps of soil, The sky, lawns and the bare earth provide natural backdrops for your photographs. Or, for variety, use some inexpensiv> poster boards as backgrounds. Your neighborhood stationery etore or art supply store can offer you a selection of colors, so you can choose the shades that compliment your flowers best. You won't need a lot of com- plicated equipment to photo- graph flowers. But, if you plan to take close-ups, a close-up at- tachment will be a big heip. With such an attachment, the zone of sharp focus may be only a few inches -- sometimes less. You must, therefore, measure the distance from the flower to the camera exactly in order to obtain sharp close-ups. Use a piece of string to do the job easily. Tape one end of the string to your adapter ring, tie a knot at the other end at the correct focusing distance for the close-up lens and exend the string straight out in front of the camera until the knot touches the front of the flower. Then drop the string and take the picture. Or, if you prefer, use a focal frame, a heavy wire metal frame that projects out' from the camera. The frame also out- lines the area that will be in sharp focus, thus solving the close-up problems of focusing and viewing. Be sure to follow the instruc- tions packaged with your film and close-up lens, and you should be on your way to good shooting! He determines to some ex- tent how the city will grow and what it will look like. You can- not have an attractive com- munity without good builders. A conscientious builder takes as much pride in the houses he builds as will the owners of these homes. That defects should sometimes develop in a house after the owners have moved in should not necessarily be held against the builder. The flawless house is still waiting to be built. House builders are practical business men who know that. a satisfied home owner is their best adver- tisement. There are reputable builders in most communities. If you are in doubt consult your banker or other business man of good standing. A builder, like any other merchant can be judged by his product. Looking over the houses put up by various builders is still the best method of comparing the workmanship as well as the styling of homes constructed by different builders. The oc- cupants of newly built homes are another reliable source of information when_ shopping around for a builder. Separate Rooms For Home Tasks - Wouldn't it be nice to have ay separate room for those home- mzking tasks that seem to cre- ate a constant clutter? There are so many--washing, ironing, sewing and keeping the family books, not to mention all kinds of hobbies. Just such a room -- with work and storage space for all kinds of jobs -- was designed by Dal- las architect Joseph F. Gordon, | AIA, for the Maytag Home Laundry Idea center. Whether building a new home or re- modeling an older one, almost any family would find this ap- proach ideal. Planned to have one wall in common with the bathroom-bed- room area, the room features pass-through storage cupboards and sorting bins. Thus steps are saved when sorting soiled laun- dry and storing clean linens. The automatic washer and a small sink are next to the sort- ing bins. The sink is used for pretreating extra-soiled areas of garments and removing stains. But, as Gordon points out, it also comes in handy when dish- es pile up during parties, or for flower arranging and other fam- ily hobbies. Detergents, bleaches and other laundry aids are stored in a cabinet under the sink and in cupboards overhead. The auto- i itie clothes dryer is next to the outside wall where, accord- ing to Maytag experts, venting is easily accomplished by run- ning a short duct through the wall. A full-length closet on the op- posite wall is useful for hanging wash-and-wear garments as they are removed from the dry- er, :nd for sto the "on and ironing board. Next to the closet a U-shaped desk serves as the homemaker's - office when it's not being used as a sewing cen- ter. Built-in cupboards and drawers below the desk provide ample storage space for the sewing machine and dressmak- ing sundries. A folding door hides the entire room -- and its possible clutter -- from the rest of the house. But you won't get that "closed- in" feeling because Gordon has provided a view through sliding glass doors into the patio or play area. You can enjoy the garden or keep an eye on the children while you work. ~ See Us First for Price and Orrality | A, MO, 8) A C-I-k PAINT PRODUCT / INTERIOR - and - EXTERIOR Flats -- Semi-Gloss -- Latex or Gloss Only 5.95 gal. -- 1.95 qt.
