McINTYRE HOOD Special London, England Correspondent to The Oshawa Times LONDON -- Liverpool] are champions of ithe first division of the English. league, winning this honor and the right to enter next season's European Cup Competition in the second sea- son since their promotion from . division two. The champions are finishing the season in a blaze of glory. A capacity crowd at Annfield Park carried them on to a glorious 5-0 victory over Arsenal to clinch the champion- ship. They have won their last six games, scoring 21 goals and giving away only two. That is real championship form. Liverpool are champions, not because of the brilliance of any individual stars, but because they play as a well-driiled, fit and dedicated team, in which every man carries his share of the load. They should make a good showing in European Cup Competition next season if they can maintain this year's form. Manchester United or Ever- ton will berunners-up. Each have one game to play, and Manchester have one point lead over Everton, who surprisingly went down to a 1-0 defeat at Chelsea, enabling the Pension- ers to climb into third position. Sheffield Wednesday and Totten- ham are tied for fifth place, but Spurs still have two games to play, and may climb into the first four. So the season has ended fairly well in line with my predictions of last August, when I forecast a drop in the league table for Tottenham, and named Everton, Liverpool and Manchester United as the most And with likely league challengers. so it has turned out, Liverpool leading the way. After six years in the second division, Sunderland have won promotion and climbed back into first division football. A 2-1 win over. Four teams are in danger of dropping from the second division to the third. Scunthorpe and Swansea have 30 points and Plymouth and Grimsby 31 each, but Swansea have two games in hand and could escape re-' legation. TIGHT RACES The third division champion- ship has settled into a fight of three teams, Coventry, Crystal Palace and Watford. Each has two games yet to play, with Crystal Palace having 59 points, Coventry 58 and Watford 57. At the other end of the third di- vision, Notts County, Wrexham land Crewe are certain for re- legation, and Barnsley and Lu- ton will battle it out for the fourth demotion spot. on the results of two games The tightest race of all is for For personal use or for @ Slates. use there ore definite advantages when e you lease a new... e Mo insurance costs . . . for full PHONE 723-4634 No meintenance costs . everything on one or two year lease items . . details.
