WHITMAN WATER ON SHELLAC FLOOR QUESTION: I have a large vase on the floor, usually kept filled with flowers. In renewing the water in this, water was spilled on the floor and left un- noticed; now there are stains on the floor. How can I remove these? The floor is shellacked and waxed. ANSWER: Usually, water spots on a shellac finish clear up as the water dries out. Wax may be retarding the moisture evaporation. Remove the wax with a wax-remover made by a nationally known manufactur- er, following label directions carefully. Then wipe the stains with a clean cloth slightly damp- ened with alcohol (too much alcohol will remove the shellac). Then apply a thin coat of shel- lac, greatly thinned with alcohol, MESH NOT BLACK QUESTION: Our black mesh fireplace screen no longer looks black although it is' dusted regularly. What can we put on to restore its blackness? ANSWER: Vacuum off all dust, then apply a thin coat of oil to improve the appear- ance. A few minutes after ap- plication, wipe off all excess oil. Otherwise it will catch dust. Furniture polish can be used n place of the oil; if it is well rubbed, all stickiness will be removed. PAINTING SHINGLES QUESTION: We bought a middle-aged, wood shingle home recently. The shingles are stain- ed; we prefer a paint finish on them. Can a paint be applied over the stain? ANSWER: Yes, but it is nec- essary to first apply a_ stain sealer, otherwise the color may bleed through the paint. This is available at your paint dealers; follow label directions carefully. ANSWER: For the best pos- sible results, countersink the nailheads slightly. Then touch up with a rust-inhibitive pant or shellac. Cover wth putty, smoothing down to the siding surface. Then paint to match the house when repainting. SQUEAKY KITCHEN FLOOR QUESTION: We have inlaid linoleum on our kitchen floor. But the wood floor under the linoleum squeaks badly. How can we get rid of the squeaks? ANSWER: I assume the underside of the kitchen floor can be reached from the base- ment, or a crawl space. The squeaking may be due to the boards not resting solidly on the beams. Have someone walk across the squeaky places; drive narrow wedges at these points between the subflooring and beams to close the gap. JET-CRACKED PLASTER QUESTION: My small home (built in 1950) was in perfect condition until the jets began the sonic blasts. Now every NEW HOMES OR RENOVATIONS by Expert Tradesmen CALL 723-7122 James O'Malley Const room has cracks and lots of them. Insurance . doesn't' cover this damage; my income is small, so I must have the re- finishing done as economically as possible. Do you know of any plaster that could be ap- plied that would cover the cracks -- both hairline and wide ones? What would be my best bet? ANSWER: Instead of seeking plaster, I highly suggest con- sidering having these walls covered. with painter's canvas. This can be painted or paper- ed as desired and no matter how many times the sound bar- rier is blasted in your neighbor- hood, resulting plaster cracks will naturally be hidden. Paint- er's canvas is available at wall- paper and some large paint stores and is applied like wall- paper. RETARDING PLASTER SET QUESTION: I have a lot of plaster patching to do. Is there any way to retard plaster set- tling? ANSWER: Yes: add either one tablespoon of whiting per- gallon, or one tablespoon of ground glue. DEPOSIT ON HUMIDIFIERS QUESTION: We use alumi- num pans filled with water on the radiators during the heating season to act as humidifiers. A white deposit forms inside the pans. How can this be re- moved? ANSWER: Fill the pans with a half and half mixture of vine- gar. and water and allow to stand for several hours, then bring to a boil. The white de- posit should be converted to a sandlike substance that can be wiped out. POROUS, STICKY LINOLEUM QUESTION: The kitchen of the house we just moved into has inlaid linoleum on the floor Evidently it was washed with too strong a cleaning solution. The floor is very porous, very sticky when wet and you can scrape off some of the inlay when wet. Wax sinks into the floor too, and never holds; dirt seems to stick like glue. We can't go into the expense of a new covering at this time. How can I treat it to avoid having to wash it each day and to give it a gloss? ANSWER: Try coating the linoleum with top quality floor or deck enamel; be sure the linoleum is absolutely clean and free of any trace of grease, wax, etc., before applying the enamel, and be sure all pilot lights in the kitchen are ex- tinguished while using any vola- tile cleaners. VENTS FOR CRAWL SPACE QUESTION: I am _ planning to build an extension of two rooms to my present house. This: will have a flat roof, with a low crawl space under the roof. I need to install vents for proper ventilation. How is the size de- termined? ANSWER: Under flat roofs, at least one square foot of vent, opening should be provided for each 150 square feet of roof area. However, if the vertical clearance is small in relation to the horiontal area, natural ventilation under flat roofs is usually ineffective, Mechanical ventilation should be provided in these cases, furnishing not less than six cubic feet per hour per square foot of horizontal area, under the roof. GRAY WHITE RUBBER TILE | QUESTION: We 'have black and white square rubber tiles in our bathroom. The white ones look light gray. What can I do to make them white again, with- out affecting the black, or tak- ing the color off the black. ANSWER: Only a water-emul- sion, self-polishing wax should be used on rubber tile; the dis- coloration may be due to the use of a wax containing naphtha de- teriorating the tile and causi tant is washing the hands be- fore handling food or eating' utensils? Personally, this is a must with me. But perhaps I am too touchy. Several months ago an el- derly relative (76) came to live at our home. The fact that she does not wash her hands causes| me to cringe whenever she asks to help in the kitchen. Although I admonish my two sma!) ch'. dren quite purposely in her presence of the ecess.., clean hands before handling food, she doesn't seem to get the point. For my own peace of mind I have refused to let her dry dishes or set the table. After all, I am responsible for the health "of five persons. Yet maybe this one thing has reached mountainous propor- tions with me.--MRS, SH Rather astonishing, don't you think, that any adult should need to be told the importance touching food. It's part of the difference be- tween a healthy civiliation and a disease-ridden one. Oh, sure, you can violate any the black to "bleed" over the white. However, try cleaning the tile floor with a wax-removing floor cleaner made by a nation- ally known manufacturer, fol- iowing label directions careful-; ly. Soaps and detergents in this will safely remove any surface grime discoloring the tile, as well as any wax accumulation. RADIATOR PAINT QUESTION: I just want to re- paint two living room radiators. How can I detenmine how much radiator enamel I will require for the job. ANSWER: Multiply the front area of each radiator by seven. The result will be the total num- ber of square feet to be painted. Divide this figure into the num- ber of square feet that a gallon of your desired paint will cover (usually, a gallon of enamel will give about 600 square feet one coat).
