ISOS BES Sy SR ys ee Et 16 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Friday, April 17, 1964 CAUSE TO CELEBRATE ELI LEA ED Scotland Soccer Team Is Three-Time Winner By M. McINTYRE HOOD The Oshawa Times GLASGOW, Scotland -- For the first time in over eighty years of International footba contests, Scotland has defeated England in three successive seasons. One has to go back to 1882, for the last year in which Scotland achieved this feat. In a stirring game, played in heavy rain at Hamden Park, Scotland's team beat England by the only goal of the game notched in the 29th minute of the second half when a header by centre forward Gilzean, 'of Dundee, from a corner kick, went into the English net. The Hampden Roar, from the throats of over 130,000 rabid Scots was heard at its loudest when the Scots went ahead, and stayed ehead until the final whistle went. This victory means that Scot- land and England jointly share the home international champ- ionship for 1963-64. This is the third successive year for Scot- Jand to finish at the top of the table, and in these. three years they have lost only one home international game, that with Ireland earlier his season, The last time Scotland duplicated this achievement was in the 1925, 1926 and 1927. i |ENGLAND TOO FANCY England lost this game by indulging in over-fancy tactics in the forward line. Jimmy Greaves with his direct attack- ing tactics was sadly missed, The deft touches of Eastham and Hunt never looked like overcoming a dour Scottish de- fence, and the two English wingers, Paine and Hunt, were sadly out of the game. In contrast, Scotland's foot- ball was straightforward stuff, with fire in the attack, and no wasting of time in heading for the English goal. Scotland were worthy of at least a three goal victory, and more than once sheer luck found an English boot or head stopping the ball going into the net. On this showing, Scotland looks a better bet than England for world cup honors, and Eng- land needs to bring Greaves back into the forward line in the -next international, to be played against Uruguay a' Wembley on May 6. : Until this defeat: by Scotland, England had not lost in the last seven international games played, so an excellent record has gone by the board. And another noteworthy fact about the game was that Scotland used only two of its top stars playing for English clubs, Denis Law and John White. There are probably more than a dozen other Scots playing in England of international calibre. IN THE LEAGUES With several of the leading teams having a day off because of the calls of international foot- ball, there was little change in the first division of the English League. At the top are Liver- pool 52 points from 37 games; Everton 50 points from 40 games and Manchester United 49 points from 39 games. With five games yet to play, Liverpool seem certain champions. Leeds have won promotion to the frst division, beating. Swan- sea 3-0 to get the necessary points. Sunderland and Preston both drew their games, but with four point lead and two games each yet to play, Sunderland should go up, as they have a much better goal average than Preston, Coventry have returned to winning ways, and are now tied at the top of the third division with Crystal Palace, but leading on goal average, with Watford two points behind. They each have three games to play, so there may be no final decision until the last Saturday of the season, Carlisle, Workington and Brad- ford City, at the top of the fourth division, each have 54 points, with three games to play. Exter have 53 points with four games to play and Gilling- ham, with 52 points, still have six games to play and might well make the jump to the third division. Because of the Hamden Inter- national, no league games were played in Scotland.
