@ THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thuredey, April 16, 1964 By MRS. KEN GAMSBY ORONO Few objections were lodged against installation of a municipal water system in Orono at the recent Municipal Board hearing. The hearing, at- tended by some 40 property owners from the village, was completed within 45 minutes. Mr. Ludgate of the Municipal Board presided over the hear- ing and was the sole member of the board present. He in- formed the meeting he would) take his findings back to the board who will then give their decision, This decision is ex- pected wthin two weeks and will be a tentative approval. Final approval will.-be given after the calling of tenders. | George Barber, a member of \the- engineering firm which drafted the preiminary plans,! outlined the scheme to the board member and meeting. Archie Forsythe of the On-| tario Water Resources Commis- sion said costs of the project and the annual repayment totail- ed $16,515. This was recoverable | through an annual frontage rate) of 42 cents, an annual connec-} jtion charge of seven dollars, a consumer rate of $28 and a mill) rate of .64 mills, The average) cost to those using water is estimated at $64 a year. { Dr. A. Forrester, chairman of the trustees stated a vote was held on water in December 1962 and that it had been carried in the affirmative, 207 to 99. He also stated that the village trustees were in full support of the proj- ect. Lorne Perrault, speaking on behalf of Clarke Township, said council had no objection to the project. As -an individual, he stated he was behind the proj- ect 100 per cent even though it would raise his annual water rate, O. W. Rolph also spoke in favor of the proposed system pointing not only to his own private advantage but to the op- eration of Orono rink. L. McGee asked if his Duch- ess street west property would be serviced with water, No pro- vision was shown on the pre- liminaty plan but Mr. Barber pointed out it was intended to service this location with a house connecetion rather than run a main down the street for the single property. Mrs, Gibson asked if she would have to pay frontage on all her frontage on the corner lot. She was informed that the maximum frontage chargeable would be 66 feet. Mr. A. Piggott said plans showed a main crossing his property on an unnamed street at the north of the village. He asked how this could be done. Mr. Barber pointed out the plan was only preliminary and that if the main was to go across private property it would first have to be negotiated.
