Referee Frank Udvari Has Lengthy Record, Criticisms And Fines Canadian Press Sports Editor "Frank Udvari is th worst A few reporters were around to record the words, but where was Punch after the game, which Maple Leafs won 3-2 on -room before reporters could get to him. And no wonder. It certainly would have been a twist to hear a winning coach complain about the officiating while his athletes were whooping it up. Imlach's appraisal of Udvari © followed the pattern set by | coaches in playoffs, and during the NHL season, over the years. They, and some of their play- ers, make ptobably a dozen or! more mistakes during a game and they take the heat off them-|was selves at times by picking on the guys in striped shifts. 8ID ABEL FINED : Udvari, a 39-year-old insur- ance man from Kitchener, Ont., who has been officiating in the big leagues for 13 years, has had his share of barbs directed at him. Two weeks ago, Coach Sid Abel of the Wings said, FRANK UDVARI among other things, that Udvari "gutless" after he awarded Chicago Black Hawks a dis- puted goal in the Stanley Cup semi-final. Abel wa by League Campbell. This prompted Vern DeGeer of the Montreal Gazette to do a little researching. This total, said DeGeer doesn't count the $25 and $50 fines. DeGeer recalled the spring of -1961, and another Stanley Cup playoff between Detroit and Chi- cago. The Wings won the fourth game of the best-of-seven series 2-1 and after the game Chicago Manager Tommy Ivan charged that the winning goal was scored with two men in the Hawk goal-mouth and that Ud- vari "didn' have the guts to call it." Waddell, who combines hockey with harness racing, has three wins, five seconds and four thirds to his credit at Greenwood Raceway. He fired 48 goals last season to lead South Mountain to the St. Law- rence - Ottawa Valley League championship. "But I wouldn't consider a hockey career now," Waddell said Wednesday in an interview. "The racing and hockey seasons clash and I would sooner race anyway.' Waddell grew up with horses on his father's farm at Oxfor Mills, Ont. about 30 miles south of Ottawa. When he was 16 he began driving at such tracks as Connaught, Blue Bonnet and Richelieu. Last year he guided 28 winners at Blue Bonnet and Rideau-Carlteon Raceways. Three years ago he was scouted by Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League, but as yet is still a free agent. He hopes to play for Morrisburg, Ont., intermediate hockey team next season. And Imlach gave up $200 after a Toronto - Montreal game when he suggested that the "three stars" of the even- ing were Udvari and his two linesmen. Incidentally, DeGeer recalls, the 1961 Cup final cost Coach Toe Blake of Montreal Cana- diens $2,000 when he took a swing at another referee, Dal- ton McArthur. Last Dec. 7 at Toronto, in the now-famous Maple Leaf Gar- dens 'blood bath between the Leafs and Hawks, Udvari was the referee. Campbell scanned his game report, held Coaches Imlach and Billy Reay respon- sible for their players' behavior and socked them $1,000 each. A bunch of players were hit for smaller amounts. Trouble seems to follow Mr. Udvari.
