He did not say how many im- migrants would be involved in the plan or where they would settle. Several provinces had promised co-operation in locat- ing farms and extending farm loans. The French government was considering considerable assist- ance to pay displacement costs for the Algerian families, now living in France. Mr. Tremblay said an official of his department has been sent to Paris to assist the French government in planning the im- migration project. Mr, Tremblay was. replying to Paul. May Make Dues Checkoff Compulsory TORONTO (CP) -- The Globe and Mail says the Ontario gov- ernment is considering changes in labor legislation that would require a vote among employ- ees before a union can acquire bargaining rights. The newspaper also says the provincial cabinet is dealing with the question of legislation to compel companies to check- off union dues when requested by a majority of employees, Existing certification proce- dures allow a union to gain bar- gaining rights without a vote if it ean prove to the Ontario La- bor Relations Board through membership cards that it rep- resents 55 per cent of the em- plovees, The cards must be accompan- ied by a statement that each applicant for membership has paid $1 to the union. The suggested change, if an- proved by the cabinet, would eliminate the need by the un- ion to collect the dollar, would: impose a vote in all sases, the newspaper says. The United Steelworkers of America (CLC) waged a long ind bitter strike against golc nines in 1953 in an unsuccess il attempt to gain the dur heck - off.
