H. RAMSEY The discourses and prayer, be- ginning with John 13, contain the most profound, intimate, lofty and inexhaustible truths ever expressed by Christ. Because they were spoken only in the Upper Room, or nearby, we can assume they were intended for the disciples. They have come down to us, however, through the Gospel of John, one-third of which is de- voted to a vivid and minute de- tailing of Christ's last 24 hours among men, In the opening verses of chap- ter 13, the disciple reveals something of the oniniscience of Christ. His knowledge of the past and the future shows clearly that His will and think- ing are one with God. Now, the One who shares om- nipotence with the Father, per- forms an act which makes this divine majesty the lowliest of servants. He rises from the table where supper has already to wash the feet of the others was to declare himself the ser- vant of them all. So, Jesus waited to see what they would do. The Jews will have none of it, catch Pilate in a trap, and demand Christ's death. To save his own position, Pilate has no other choice but to deliver Christ for crucifixion.
