UO =o LONDON SNAPSHOTS 4. Big Egg Supply Blocks Imports By M. McINTYRE HOOD Special to The Oshawa Times LONDON -- Britain is now so close to being self-sufficient for supplies of eggs that other coun- tries which were exporting lafge quantities to this country have been warned, that there is no longer a market in Britain for their surpluses. Ciiairman of the Egg Board, Christopher Harrison, has told del from 10 countries that Bri farmers are now supply- ing 97 per cent of the nation's egg tequirements. A big surge in poultry population will bring an- other million laying birds into egg production this year, and this would mean that the coun- try would not need to import any eggs at all. This is a hard blow to European countries sat- urated with eggs and looking to- wards Britain as an outlet for theif surplus production. COUNCILLOR SUSPENDED Councillor Robert Young has been Suspended as leader of the Labor of Cheshunt Urban Council, Hertfordshire. His of- fence was that he was planning to buy a three-bedroomed coun- cil house. The case was explain- ed in this way by a Labor party spokesman: 'There is an acute shortage of council houses in Cheshunt. None has been built for at least three years, and those we have got should re- main available for renting. That is local Labor party policy. We have, therefore, found it neces- sary. to discipline Councillor Young." HISTORIC HOUSE m Council and local resi- dents have joined to fight a schemé to destroy Pitt Place, one of the most historic houses in Surrey, and replace it with modern apartments. Pitt Place was built in 1635 and consider- ably enlanged in the 18th cen- tury by the Prince Regent, who used it as a hideaway for his assignations with Mrs. Fitzher- bert. Charles II is believed to have been a frequent visitor, ac- anied by Nell Gwynne. lard Lyttleton, the notorious 18th century rake, had a rather less pleasant' experience. He died there in a fit after being visited by a ghost. She was the mother of a girl he had seduced. The house has a fine vine-house and conservatory afd is decor- ated with the Prince Regent's coat of arms. An appeal against its demolition is to be heard next month. LABOR YOUTH BANNED Yorkshire Labor party leaders have "'closed" the West York- shire Federation of Young So- cialists because of its r-fusal to stop its prohibited association with the Trotskyist movement. The Federation had 16 branches. The West Yorkshire Federation, according to the notice of closure, has been repeatedly warned against the activities it engaged in with the Trotskyites. These included marches to pro- test against unemployment among young people. GIFT FROM CANADA Another substantial gift has been given by a former resident now living in Canada towards the restoration fund of the 1ith century abbey at Waltham Abbey, Essex. This gift, the latest from Colin Rutherford, of British Columbia, follows a $6,000 gift at Christmas towards the fund. The previous cheque| brought the total donated by Mr. Rutherford up to more than $30,- 000. A public appeal, opened al- most four years ago, for restor- ation work on the Abbey, which was founded by King Harold be- fore the Norman Conquest, has raised just over the target figure of $90,000. PRINCE A TRUMPETER The news that Prince Charles is a trumpeter has been a secret well kept at his school at Gor- donstoun. It came out only when the Prince of Wales went to St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh m JACKIE GLEASON & STEVE McQUEEN add a new curve to the old army game in, Gordonstoun, Prince of Wales started learn- ing to play the trumpet as soon -- went to Gordonstoun in REMEMBER ZEEBRUGGE Royal Marines at Deal will celebrate their tercentenary on April 23 with a ram. which commemorates the part played| by the regiment in the. first world war raid on Zeebrugge.
