2 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesdey, Merch 10, 1964 SILVERTONES STAGE DEBUT A new teen rock 'n roll group, 'The Silvertones," ap- peared on the Oshawa dance circuit recently, both at the mew Friday night ORC dance, run by the 50-50 Club, and the Saturday dance at the UAW Hall. Featured in the group are Rene Pleau, on drums, Brian Twaites on guitar, Jim Clarke on lead guitar, and Charles Bremner as maister of ceremonies and vocalist. --Oshawa Times Photo Ajax Bard Proposes Inter-School Poetry By ROD WILLMOT (Ajax High Reporter) two news- school school supporting papers! The only size, anyway. One paper is called, off'. The former prints usual humor, sports, poetry, and diverse miscellaneous items -- everything, really. Secondly, lets | consist almost entirely of | humor: I bet Ajax High is the only} thus, "Soundoff" real- ly lives up to its name. Obviously, the latter paper could never be sufficient by it- serve a triple purpose. For one, it makes for keen competition "C'est Nous" pay more atten- tion to "culturt'" without also increasing the sometimes small humor content. Lastly, it points out the fact that it is more than 'Miss Central' Dance Has Plantation Theme By Brian williams (OCCI Reporter) © Centralites have really been past weck, since our exams ended last Wednesday. It's been fun to watch the struggles of the students from the other schools, who are still in the middle of exams. The only trouble is that we're get- ting our marks back already. Well, that's life. Part of the fun and games Jast week was the trip to the COSSA basketball champion- ships in Belleville. The cheering from the Central supporters was the loudest per person of any school, I think. Our cheerlead- ers did a good job and out- shone the other schools. I's sure the players are gratefu for their support. Thanks go} to the Donevan people who help- ed support us, too. I just ho the Donevan girls realize that Jim isn't the only players on the Centra] team. FRIDAY 13th All Centralites are in for a thrill this week, when the an- nual GAA dance comes up on Friday, the 13th (gulp!) This is one of: the prettiest dances of the year. The decora- tions and stuff like that will be on the theme of a southern cot- ton plantation, and it will be called "Cotillion". 'Miss Central will be chosen and crowned during the dance. Let's see everyone out this Fri- day to relax and enjoy yourself after exams, to support your GAA and to elect your "Queen of Central", : And now, you lucky people, Cent jhere is Clyde's latest contribu- enjoying themselves during the | tion to the world of great liter- ature. It's a poem (?) about our heroes: THE BEATLES I'd like to write about a group that's rare, Because they each have 10 pounds of hair, - When you see a teen floating o'er the ground, You know. what she hears is the Beatle sound. va Twinkle, twinkle, Ringo Starr, How we wonder what you are. My father thinks that you're insane, But my mother loves' you just the same. The leader of the group, his name is Paul, And I hate him 'cause he's such a doll. He's the handsomest member of this team, And he sure does make my girlfriend scream: John and George are the the other two, And Pad guitars is what they So when across the land there wails that sound, You'll-know the Beatles are around. And, you know, underneath all that hair, I'm positive there's brains in there, possible -- And certainly bene- ficial -- to d¥Sert one's individ- uality. BEATS GRUMBLING By this I mean simply this: it is better to express your dis- approval of something, and then attempt to improve the situa- tion than merel yto sit by and grumble. It seems to me that far too many people are quite content to be discontented! And only because they want to. be "one of the crowd", or not be "centered out". For this reason, I congratulate the editors and staff of 'School Soundoff" Claude Dutheil, Bob Hepburn, George Meek, Martin Ward and Greg Welch -- for their fine work and courage. Myself being a nonconformist, I am going to assert my own in- dividuality, I don't plan to write what it was suggested that I write in these 'Articles from Ajax High", My reason for this is that most material-that might interest, for example, a student in Oshawa (news such as sports) could be found in those articles done by other Oshawa students, As for material that would only interest a student from my fine school, this can be found in "C'est Nous'? and "'Soundoff'"" -- and I wouldn't want to cheat them of business! Therefore, I believe it is rea- sonable that I occasionally, re- peat, occasionally -- vary from the normal parth of. 'reporting'. However, I will always keep things related to the schools of this area. FOR POETS Being a poet, I am naturally interested in + communicating with others of my own kind. I would like to start an_inter- schoo] poetry club -- preferably, correspondence between poets of different schools. I' enlarge upon this next week, but mean- while, anyone who is interested already may write me at: Box 744, Ajax. COULDN'T SAY NAME WALLINGT ~~', England (CP) Court ushers found recently they could not pronounce a Po- lish man's name to call him into court so they went around the waiting room displaying his name written on a piece of pa- per. "Where can we go?" All set for some harsh words? Go home! Hang storm windows, paint the woodwork, shovel the Sidewalk, wash the car, learn to cook, wax the floor, study your lessons and when you are through, and not tired ... read a book. The world does not owe you a living. In plain words, quit being a cry baby, get out of your dream world. Develop a back- bone, not a wishbone! Parents are tired of nursing, protecting, éxcusing, appealing, begging, helping, d_nying them- selves needed comforts for your every whim and fancy because your selfish ego dominates. your selfish thinking and requests. Of course if these words men- tioned above do not apply to you -- If the shoe does not fit ITKC Telis Teens 'Quit Crying' -- there is always a more com- fortable one in the showcase. Our King's Campaign meet- ings take place bi-monthly at Denis O'Connor High School. Before closing we would like to congratulate St. Joseph's Ban- tam Basketball Team for win- ning the COSSA trophy, but of course they will soon have to put up with some stiff compe- tion when our boys hit the the floor.
