OLGA HILL eeeeeereereeeeeeseeseeeeeeeeeeeees in 'Night Must Fall MAX WICKENS W im Staff) AJAX -- The Pic-Ax Players ame back swinging Saturday with a rerun of a play which had earlier scored a hit during a three-night stand in Pickering. It was the first time in more than a year that Ajax members of the group had the opportun- fty to play toa hometown Members of the group have expressed.regret at the lack of suitable facilities for more fre- quent performances in Ajax. For Saturday's one-night stand, however, they managed to se- care the audiorium of Ajax High School. A seasoned cast under neo- phyte director Dave Smith achieved a highly-enjoyable per- formance of Emlyn Williams' ht Must Fall'. play, for some time a fa- vorite in British theatre, is re- latively a newcomer to Cana- dian- stages. GENUINE SUSPENSE A thriller in three acts, the Pic-Ax production climbed to a peak of convincing and genuine suspense Directing only his second play with the local group, Mr. Smith ean rightly claim to have scored nothing less than full marks in his task. At present a Canadian Broad- easting Corporation technician in Toronto, he has demonstrat- ed a capability which could well aid him in breaking into the pro- |fessional directing. field. . Standout in the cast was Ella Vickers as a cantankerous pseu- do-invalid with a passion for chocolates and hackneyed nov- els, Ella moved smoothly through her part in a near-professional performance. SPITEFUL, PRECOCIOUS She opens as a spiteful, pre- cocious, wheelchair ridden widow, demanding frequent readings by her plain-Jane niece and companion. As the play approaches its climax, she dies, flattered and bemused by.a motherly crush on her murderer. : The man who brings her death, is a weasely middle-aged philan- derer, hotel bell-hop and ex-sea- man. The role was played by Jack Vickers, Ella's husband, He toadies his way into the affec- tions of his» intended victim, playing the part of a delinquent with a warm heart. 'Jack deserves especial credit for his efforts in this part, prob- ably the most difficult in the play. He was required to be amiably sinister one moment, and then to break out reveal- ing himself as a_ hysterical psychopathic murderer.
