When the ding dies at a low level, the | player to speak has an obliga tion to keep the bidding going #f it is at all feasible to do s Since his only choice lies be tween passing or bidding, he cannot be held strictly responsi ble for having the values thaf any bid he makes would ordi narily imply. Thus, a one notrump bid in this sequence does not mean that hg has the customary 16 ~ 9 8 ts. On the contrary, he 1 usually have three or four oints"less than the normal ex- pectancy. A player in the pxo- tective or balancing seat is. en- titled to assume that his partner has substantially more values than his pass would indicate, and he should generally act on that basis rather than pass. 2. Two hearts. This would be a dangerous overcall to make if East had opened the bidding as dealer with one spade, but, under the circumstances, a competitive bid of two hearts is clearly indicated. « 3. Pass. There is a limit to how far to carry the protective principle. The best contract ap- pears to be one spade -- played by West. This is primarily a de- fensive hand, once West has bid spades, and it is quite likely that the best result will be achieved by passing. The probability is that West will go down one or two tricks. _ 4. Double. Of course, this is a light takeout double, but, in the balancing stion, values may be shaded in order to keep the bidding alive. There is a good chance: of making a part score, and, at the same time, de- priving the opponents of one. 5. Three diamonds. Here we have ample values for a le, but, because of the one-sided nature of the hand, they can best be identified by jumping to three diamonds. Naturally, this shows more strength than would a two diamond bid. The hope ds that partner can bid three no- trump. 6, Double. It would be wrong to bid two hearts, which we might well do if the ace of clubs were the deuce. It is important to distinguish between a protéc- tive bid and a hand with full values of its own. The plan is to bet two hearts over the expect- ed response of two clubs or diamonds, and thus indicate greater values than .would a di- rect two heart bid. a Passing a forcing PREDICTS WIN MOSCOW (AP) -- Gabrtel Korobkov, veteran coach of the Soviet track and field team, pre- dicted Wednesday the Russians will be so powerful at Tokyo that they will win the 1964 Olympic games regardless of the competition.
