RUSED CAR PIA \ ON NOW AT CLIFF MILLS MOTORS LTD. 260 KING ST. WEST CONTRACT BRIDGE By B. JAY BECKER (Top. record-holder in Mesters' Individuel Championship Ploy) South dealer. Both sides vulnerable. 4 3108749 @Ki8s73% 92 Alo: Sakees Opening lead -- seven of dia» monds, This deal oceurred in a team match and generated consider- able discussion as to how de- clarer should have played the hand, At both tables the final contract was six spades and the opening lead was a dia- mond. Wihout the diamond lead the slam would have beet made easily, but with it both de- clarers had a tough problem to solve, At the first table, declarer won the diamond and decided, after great thought, to try to take care of his losing diamond by leading the A-K-Q of clubs and discarding three diamonds from dummy. He reasoned that he had an 80 per cent chance of finding the clubs divided 4-4 or 5-3, and that this gave him a better chance of protecting against the dia- mond loser than if he took a heart finesse, which offered only a 50 per cent chance of suc- cess. But West ruffed the third club lead with the queen and South went down one. At the second table, the de- clarer led the queen of hearts at trick two and finessed. When the queen held the trick, he ruffed a club discarded the ten of diamonds on the ace of hearts, and then led a spade. As a result of this line of play, he made the slam, worth 1,430 points, and his team gained 1,530 points on the deal. It does seem as though the second declarer chose the in- ferior line of play, but, since his method succeeded in the ac- tual case, it is hard to find fault with his play, Practical results count much more than theoret- ical results. The first declarer might also have made the contract if he had played differently. He should have led the queen of hearts at trick two because there was some chance that West might either have covered with the king or else betrayed possession of the king. There was nothing urgent about cash- ing the A-K-Q of clubs before leading the queen of hearts te see what would happen. SALLY'S SALLIES NOJ! WE DEMAND THAT OUR NAME BE CLEARED, OFFICIALLY!!
